In this case both the patients of mine, they had voluntary donors. However because their blood groups were not matching, it was not technically feasible to go ahead with transplant. Now as per the Organ Transplant Act, unrelated transplants are very difficult to get through. And in which case, a case that there is no monetary transaction has to be made out. inter-religious relationships.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a past tainted by violent communal rioting between Hindus and Muslims, Mumbai had become sharply divided along religious lines.\u003cbr/\u003eThe kidney swap between a Hindu and Muslim couple has proved that the city's spirit of harmony is still very much alive.      \u003cbr/\u003eBusinessman Dayal Bhanushali is a changed man today.\u003cbr/\u003eSeven months ago, his kidneys failed , leaving him in acute distress and completely dependent on dialysis .   \u003cbr/\u003eHis wife, Damyanti Bhanushali,  offered to donate a kidney to alleviate his suffering but medically it was not possible.\u003cbr/\u003eOn one of his visits to Jaslok hospital where he was getting treatment, Bhanushali met a couple who had a problem very similar to his own.\u003cbr/\u003eShameem Begum had been on dialysis for more than a year after losing a kidney . \u003cbr/\u003eHer husband, Sayeed Mohammed, had offered to donate one of his kidneys to his wife but again,doctors ruled it out for medical reasons.\u003cbr/\u003eSo when the two couples met, they got talking and an idea was born - why not try a kidney swap ?\u003cbr/\u003eThe doctor was consulted, tests done to determine whether this would work and as if by a miracle , medical approval was granted .\u003cbr/\u003eThe paperwork for the procedure however took nearly four months to complete, as Indian law favours relatives as donors, and makes it clear that no exchange of money is to be involved.\u003cbr/\u003eReports of illegal organ trade where poor sell their body parts for cash have made the legal provisions even more stringent .\u003cbr/\u003eThe Human Organ Transplantation Act of 1994 allows a father, mother, brother, or sister to donate organs . \u003cbr/\u003eOther live donors are screened by an official committee to ascertain that they are donating organs exclusively because of emotional attachment to patients and not for monetary or material gain.\u003cbr/\u003eThe four operations - two to retrieve the kidneys from the donors and two to transplant them - took place on June 8 in Jaslok hospital.   \u003cbr/\u003eA similar swap done in 2004 had resulted in the death of both the kidney recipients.\u003cbr/\u003eThis time however , the transplants have been successful and both the patients have recovered well.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it is not the medical success of the kidney swap that has grabbed the headlines .\u003cbr/\u003eIt is the religious identity of the two couples that has brought a little of Mumbai's old secular spirit back.\u003cbr/\u003eDayal Bhanushali, a Hindu , is now living with a kidney donated by Sayeed Mohammed, a Muslim, while his wife Damayanti's kidney has given a new life to Shammem Begum, Dayal's wife. \u003cbr/\u003eIndia, a predominantly Hindu nation of more than 1 billion people, also has one of the world's largest Muslim populations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe two communities have had tense relations in parts of Western India, including Mumbai , which witnessed widespread Hindu-Muslim rioting in 1993 that killed nearly 2000 people.\u003cbr/\u003eBut religion was the last thing on the mind of the two suffering families when they agreed to the kidney-exchange.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Dayal Bhanushali and Shameem Begum ,the swap has created a special bond that transcends all
