by Syrian rebels.\u003cbr/\u003eThe four peacekeepers were abducted on Tuesday whilst on patrol near the frontier with the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.\u003cbr/\u003eAddressing reporters in Manila, Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Raul Hernandez called for their immediate and safe release.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The peacekeepers who are members of the UN disengagement observer force or UNDOF where taken towards the direction of Al Jamla in Syria,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe abduction was the second such incident in the area in two months. \u003cbr/\u003eIt exposed the vulnerability of the UN peacekeeping mission during the Syrian civil war and sent a worrisome signal to Syria's neighbours about the ensuing lawlessness along their shared frontiers.\u003cbr/\u003eRebels with the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigades are holding the peacekeepers, a spokesman said in a phone interview. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Yarmouk Brigades were behind the abduction in March of 21 Filipino UN peacekeepers released unharmed after four days of negotiations. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a statement posted on the Yarmouk Brigades' Facebook page, the group said the peacekeepers were not hostages, but were being held for their own safety. \u003cbr/\u003eThe statement did not specify where the peacekeepers were being held, nor did it specify conditions for their release.\u003cbr/\u003eThe separation zone on the Golan Heights is supposed to be free of any armed groups but in recent months it has been the scene of fighting between Syrian government forces and rebel fighters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN monitoring mission was set up in 1974, seven years after Israel captured the Golan Heights and a year after it managed to push back Syrian troops trying to recapture its territory in another regional war. \u003cbr/\u003eFor
