Mid shot protesters holding banner \u003cbr/\u003eA newly released human rights report says that inmates from detention camps in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Afghanistan often live shattered lives after their release.\u003cbr/\u003eHuman rights experts at the University of California, Berkeley conducted a two-year study of the lives of 62 released detainees.\u003cbr/\u003eLaurel Fletcher, Director of the International Human Rights Law Clinic at UC Berkeley School of Law and co-author of the report told reporters on Wednesday that \"many felt that Guantanamo simply was not over for them, that they continued to struggle... to try and regain normalcy to their lives.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Detainees suffer from what we call a 'Guantanamo stigma,' Fletcher added. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is an association with Guantanamo and this presumption in the public eye that they are dangerous men and that stigma is preventing them from returning to normal lives.\"\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers conducted interviews with released detainees in nine countries. \u003cbr/\u003eThe study also included interviews with key government officials, military experts, former guards, interrogators and other camp personnel.\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost two-thirds of the former detainees interviewed reported having financial as well as psychological problems since leaving Guantanamo.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report said 31 out of 55 study respondents who discussed their interrogation sessions at Guantanamo described them as abusive. \u003cbr/\u003eDetainees said they had been subjected to stress positions, short shackling, and prolonged solitary confinement.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also reported being exposed to loud music, extreme temperatures and strobe lights for extended periods - often simultaneously.\u003cbr/\u003eThe authors concluded that the cumulative impact of these methods constitutes cruel and inhumane treatment that in some cases rises to the level of torture.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report was released to highlight attention on the issue as US President-elect Barack Obama's advisers are weighing up the future of the Guantanamo Bay prison and possibility of prosecuting terrorism suspects in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the plan being crafted inside Obama's camp, some detainees would be released and others would be charged in US courts, where they would receive constitutional rights and open trials. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, underscoring the difficult decisions Obama must make to fulfil his pledge of shutting down Guantanamo, the plan could require the creation of a new legal system to handle the classified information inherent in some of the most sensitive cases.\u003cbr/\u003eThe University of California, Berkley report authors also call for an independent, nonpartisan commission to investigate Guantanamo and other US run detention sites.\u003cbr/\u003eOf the estimated 770 detainees held at Guantanamo since it opened in 2002, more than 500 have been released without formal criminal charges or trial, the report said.\u003cbr/\u003eOf the 250 or more who remain in detention, only 23 have been charged with a crime, it said. Two have been convicted and one has pled guilty.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, some local church groups held a protests against torture, and urged the Obama administration to take swift action against
