Salsa is very popular in Puerto Rico and locals and aficionados from overseas flocked to the capital San Juan recently for the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe Olympics may be taking London by storm but another athletic competition has been gripping Puerto Rico. \u003cbr/\u003eSalsa is very popular in Puerto Rico and locals and aficionados from overseas flocked to the capital San Juan recently for the 16th World Salsa Congress. \u003cbr/\u003eOne, two, three, one, two, three, turn, for, five, six.. it is 9 am and  already over 36 degrees Celsius in San Juan where one of the best salsa professionals of Puerto Rico keeps time for the students  eager to master new moves.\u003cbr/\u003eOver 100 people follow Jean Carlo Rosario's feet during the 3 hour-workshop, nobody minds the striking heat, the sweat, the endless repetitions...they have all come to Puerto Rico to improve their salsa dancing technique. \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of salsa lovers_ from beginners to experienced professionals_ gathered in Puerto Rico's capital , during the last week of July for the 16th World Salsa Congress. \u003cbr/\u003eThe annual event includes workshops, professional contests and endless nights of salsa dancing and fun. \u003cbr/\u003eAficionados come from the four corners of the world.\u003cbr/\u003e\" I've been dancing salsa for 18 years, it gives me a lot of energy and it's a lot of fun. I started dancing back in Dusseldorf and I want to improve my moves so I came here to the congress in Puerto Rico for the first time,\" says Renata from Germany who also confesses that she thought she was good salsa dancer until she came to Puerto Rico and saw the real deal. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd the real deal is couples like Karen and Ricardo, an Argentinean/Chilean young couple who represent Argentina at the World Salsa Open.\u003cbr/\u003eKaren and Ricardo won the Argentina's salsa open and were selected to compete in Puerto Rico, the most prestigious of all salsa dancing competition around the world, according to the experts.\u003cbr/\u003e\" We were surprised at how the people applauded us. It is our first time here, and the Puerto Rican audience is very demanding, they carry salsa in their blood and everybody here is extremely good. The level is extraordinarily high, it is after all a world contest, the best couples are here,\" says Karen who adds that salsa dancing makes her \"feel alive\".\u003cbr/\u003eBoth in the early 20s, they have been dancing since the age of 9, although Ricardo started as a classical ballet dancer and only switched to salsa once he started to date Karen 6 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eSixty couples from 25 different countries were invited to take part in the salsa open this year.\u003cbr/\u003eKaren and Ricardo have arrived to compete in the final  alongside another  7 couples. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are practicing one of their choreographies without music  in one of the corners of the main ballroom. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the final on July 28, the couples didn't find out the song they are dancing until the last minute therefore improvisation skills, coordination with their partner and thousands of hours of training are essential to win.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Avisale a mi contrario\" played live by a band was the chosen tune. \u003cbr/\u003eKaren and Ricardo danced their best, but were beaten into second place losing to a Brazilian couple. \u003cbr/\u003eCarine Morais and Rafael Barrios had already won the World Salsa Open in 2010 and after a 1 year hiatus they reconquered the title and the 5-thousand USD money prize that comes with it.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe audience during the selection rounds and the final was mainly local. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is hard to find a Puerto Rican that does not dance salsa and every member of the public dissected every step, every shimmy, the spins, the arm work with detail and frowned or cheered accordingly.\u003cbr/\u003eMany were disappointed that none of the Puerto Rican couples made the top three but there was no booing or protests. They all  put their love of salsa dancing before anything else and each of the performances spoke for themselves. \u003cbr/\u003eEly Irizarry, the creator and organiser of the event says \" Thanks to the Congress, the salsa is not just of Cubans, Puerto Ricans and Latinos of New York. Salsa is now global.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe came up with the idea 16 years ago, the first night he had internet at his house. He typed salsa on his keyboard and found nothing like the idea he had in mind. \u003cbr/\u003eIrizarry wanted to create a congress to showcase the dancers not just the musicians.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The salsa (music) has been around for many years but it is only since we started this congress 16 years ago that people started to give credit to the dancers. And the dancers are the main characters of this event,\" he adds.\u003cbr/\u003eHe wanted a place where dancers could meet other dancers and exchange ideas, improve their skills, listen to live bands and improvise choreographies and get the credit he thinks they deserve,\u003cbr/\u003eThe schedule at the World Salsa Congress is tight, there is not a single minute to waste. \u003cbr/\u003eWorkshops take place from 9 am to 1 pm every day, then from 1:30 to 6:30 pm there are the different selection rounds for the contests which have various categories: professional couples, professional ensembles, professional soloists and under 17 couples, ensembles and soloists.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd then, the night comes and the same ballroom where the contest took place is invaded by daringly dressed couples from Puerto Rico and from all over the world who come to San Juan just to dance and enjoy salsa-dancing. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is my first time in Puerto Rico and I'm enjoying it thoroughly . I love salsa, I love dancing. This place gives me a whole new experience, a whole new perspective of the whole dance experience because I get to dance with everybody around the world and it's great,\" says Maibel who took a 32-hour flight from Kuala-Lumpur just to be able to test her dancing skills with experienced partners. \u003cbr/\u003eShe's new but there are many regulars who don't miss a date.\u003cbr/\u003eGiovanni from Torino in Italy hasn't missed one single congress in the past 8 years, he knows many of the couples from previous congress and dances almost non-stop until the wee hours of the morning. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Why do I like salsa?
