And with the effect of climate change, where the ice is melting and the sea surface temperature is increasing, these islands are under threat. A good natural protection is needed for these islands, and the coral reef is one of the best provided by the nature. Various of healthy coral with fish swimming amongst it
Coral reefs are some of the most fragile of the marine ecosystem on our planet.
They are under threat from warming waters around the world and human activity.
Now a group of nations has formed the Coral Triangle, a protected area of reefs, in an effort to preserve this fragile ecosystem.
These reefs around Bali are made up of hundreds of types of coral.
Reef building corals have a hard skeleton made from calcium carbonate under a soft body of tissues.
Their skeletal shapes provide abundant hiding places and homes for a large variety of marine species such as snails, anemones, sponges and tropical fish.
Corals are quickly affected by changes in environment.
Pollution or changes in water temperature can affect their structure and their ability to grow.
Healthy coral reefs sustain important marine food supplies for human communities as well.
People in coastal communities around the world rely on the ocean for their livelihood.
Six countries in southeast Asia and the Pacific recently moved on an initiative to protect marine biodiversity, which was launched at the World Ocean Conference Leader's Summit in Indonesia this year.
Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste formally adopted one of the most comprehensive and specific plans for ocean conservation.
The ten-year regional Coral Triangle initiative plan of action sets time-bound steps to address growing threats to the region's coral reefs, fisheries, mangroves, threatened species and other marine and coastal living resources.
Marthen Welly, marine project leader with conservation group The Nature Conservancy (TNC), says the countries involved in the Coral Triangle project are under threat from global warming and thus keen to take part in the fight against it.
TNC Indonesia, one of the organisations sponsoring the Coral Triangle initiative, prioritises its work in several locations in Indonesia because of their spectacular reef diversity.
One of the the places is the Penida islands in Bali, which is situated in the south western corner of the Coral Triangle.
The life of Penida's local people depend on the ocean and their income is mostly from seaweed farming and marine tourism.
Local people are involved in clearing coral near to the beaches to plant seaweed.
Seaweed is harvested every 35 days and provides farmers with an above average income.
The farms are therefore increasing while the coral near the beach is slowly being destroyed.
The threat for the coral in Penida is also coming from marine tourism activities.
Marthen Welly explains how the coral can be damaged.
Tourists are also responsible for damaging the coral by touching, stepping on and sometimes breaking and collecting the coral.
In recent years, The Nature Conservancy's Coral Triangle Centre has implemented a range of marine conservation initiatives in Penida.
Conservationists are closely monitoring coral conditions in the area.
They record recent data of coral regularly such as its physical condition, any increase or decrease in reefs and the impact of the weather on the coral.
This data is very important in determining the health of the coral.
Changes in coral conditions lead to changes in the whole ecosystem which depends on it.
Community centres have been set up in order to raise people's awareness of marine conservation.
The centres host a wide range of conservation activities such as mangrove planting and coral transplanting.
Mangrove planting has proved to be important and beneficial for the people.
The land in Penida used to be flooded by seawater because there was not any land protection.
People were encouraged to plant mangroves to protect their land from such floods.
Community leader Kadek Dalang says the planting of mangroves has proved successful in protecting people's homes.
The Coral Triangle contains 76 percent of all known coral species and it is brimming with an extraordinary variety of fish because of this diversity.
Millions of people directly depend on these seas for their livelihood.
If the seas and their coral are not protected then millions of people will be adversely affected and the world will lose one of it's most precious ecosystems.

<div class='action-container flex
