Various of fashion show\u003cbr/\u003eSouth African fashion students are hoping to raise awareness about eco-friendly designs.\u003cbr/\u003eThey hope to prove that it is possible to be environmentally friendly and fashionable. \u003cbr/\u003eThese fashion students are preparing for a design competition with a difference. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are among twenty entrants from fashion schools across South Africa in a competition that aims to raise environmental awareness in the fashion industry. \u003cbr/\u003eTeacher Derek Geddes says the 'No Kak' competition hopes to show that fashion need not create waste or pollution. \u003cbr/\u003eIn order to create garments in an environmentally responsible manner, students are not using textiles like cotton. \u003cbr/\u003eA recent report by the British environmental pressure group, Environmental Justice Foundation, in collaboration with the Pesticide Action Network UK, claims that there is routine use of harmful chemicals, including nerve agents and neurotoxins, on cotton crops.  \u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmental Justice Foundation says cotton is responsible for the release of 16% of global insecticides - more than any other single crop.  \u003cbr/\u003eStudent designer Lizelle de Wet is using only organically grown textiles.\u003cbr/\u003eBeing organically grown includes farming using only natural pest control rather than chemicals. \u003cbr/\u003eDe Wet says she has used different types of organically produced fabrics in her design.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists say the textile manufacturing industry is also a major pollutant with its use of artificial dyes, bleaches, chemicals and high volumes of water.\u003cbr/\u003eStudent Tarien Malherbe has incorporated only organic textiles in her design which have been processed using natural methods.\u003cbr/\u003eMalherbe says she is pleased with the results of using natural textiles and dyes.\u003cbr/\u003eOne week later, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the 'No Kak' Fashion Show took centre stage as part of the Natural and Organic Product Exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 'No Kak' Fashion Show was organised by the National Cleaner Production Centre, a national body helping to provide industry with cleaner production technologies and services.\u003cbr/\u003eKaren Lundbo, an advisor to the NPCP, says events like this are important to show people that environmentally friendly clothes can be stylish. \u003cbr/\u003eDesigners de Wet and Malherbe make last minute preparations before models show off their designs to the public and judges.\u003cbr/\u003eThe winning designer gets to attend a course in environmentally conscious design at the TEKO centre in Denmark. \u003cbr/\u003eMalherbe comes third with her design inspired by an African winter garden, like other runners up she won a local busary to help her continue her studies. \u003cbr/\u003eExhibition Event Organiser Janine Johnston says we need to protect
