Pan from skulls to staring child.\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eSixteen years after the world first heard about Cambodia's killing fields, the Cambodian government wants to bring the Khmer Rouge to justice.\u003cbr/\u003eBacked by U-S funding, international legal experts are arriving in the capital Phnom Penh to gather evidence against Pol Pot's murderous regime.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Khmer Rouge killed an estimated one million Cambodians but, to date,  no senior Khmer Rouge members have  been prosecuted. \u003cbr/\u003eThe evidence is everywhere in Cambodia.\u003cbr/\u003eSixteen years after the Khmer Rouge transformed Cambodia into a prison camp and spawned the killing fields, piles of skulls continue to be unearthed across the country.\u003cbr/\u003e3,000 skulls were recently exhumed at this prison site, Sala Damnak.\u003cbr/\u003eTens of thousands more are believed to be buried in the rice paddies and fields of Cambodia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe scale of Pol Pot's murders led to charges of genocide.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it has taken sixteen years for the government - and the international community to turn its attention to bringing the Khmer Rouge to justice.\u003cbr/\u003eThis week, Cambodian and international lawyers are meeting in the capital, Phnom Penh.\u003cbr/\u003eThe U-S State Department has funded a research team to gather witnesses and evidence for possible prosecutions. \u003cbr/\u003eYet, because the dead were not from a distinct ethnic group their deaths, in international legal terms, were not genocide. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery family lost someone and many families were completely wiped out. To the Cambodian people it is self evident that genocide occurred. The question of proving that to Western legal standards, beyond reasonable doubt, and the strict criteria for legal genocide is\u003cbr/\u003equite another matter.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Craig Etcheson, Cambodian Genocide Programme\u003cbr/\u003eYale's Craig Etcheson is charged with sifting through the remnants and documents of the regime. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is a gruesome task.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Khmer Rouge brought nearly 20,000 captives to this prison known as Tuol Sleng. Only 6 survived execution.\u003cbr/\u003eThis month Warren Christopher became the first U-S Secretary of State to visit Cambodia in four decades. \u003cbr/\u003eThe question is whether evidence can be assembled at the present time. Whether those responsible are still alive. I don't want to prejudge but I am glad we are getting evidence and hope we can continue with the process.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Warren Christopher, US Secretary of State\u003cbr/\u003eBut while the U-S is keen to be seen supporting justice, there are those that feel that the its role in Cambodia makes it culpable too.\u003cbr/\u003eSome argue that past American policy in Vietnam helped the Khmer Rouge to power and then kept them from justice when Vietnam ousted Pol Pot in 1979.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are many strange bed fellows in politics and many odd alliances. With the end of the Cold War and the initiation of the UN peace process a lot of those alliances were able to shift and shifted in a way that has allowed justice to begin to \u003cbr/\u003eShielded by the Khmer Rouge, the mastermind of the Killing Fields has spent the past sixteen years living free along the Thai-Cambodian border.\u003cbr/\u003eCambodia's young may have
