Clip - 'Spirit'\u003cbr/\u003e40. 24hr party people steps R to left - Tony Wilson,   Michael Winterbottom, Steve Coogan, woman0.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish director MIKE LEIGH, whose films often portray down-at-heel characters and are usually described as \"gritty\", said at the Cannes film festival that he's not obsessed with the British working class.\u003cbr/\u003eLeigh, whose film 'All Or Nothing' is in competition for a prestigious Palm D'or award, said he tends to tell the story's of working class people because he's interested in characters no-one else makes films about.\u003cbr/\u003e'All Or Nothing' tells the story of a British taxi driver who rediscovers his joie de vive, and love for his wife, after their son has a heart attack. and Leigh, who won the Palm d'Or in 1996 with 'Secrets and Lies', is considered a front-runner for the award.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he isn't getting competitive - because there's no time, and the festival successfully flatters all the directors in competition.\u003cbr/\u003eLeigh is a master of creating characters whose personal tragedies and hardships are the source of his well observed comedy, which he does with his unique way of developing moves which involves the actors from the very beginning.\u003cbr/\u003eTimothy Spall, who plays taxi drive Phil, explains: \" You know because he collaborates very much with his actors on the making and the creating of the characters, and eventually the writing as well; so it's the most creative you ever feel, because you invent this thing, you all turn up in a room, and he says we've got nothing, in eight months time or five months time hopefully we'll shoot the movie. And literally that's the case every time.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLeigh relies on the actors to bring their own experiences to the creative process and scheduled in 20 weeks of rehearsal time before shooting \"All Or Nothing\". SALLY HAWKINS and DANIEL MAYS where amazed at how their characters developed during that time.  \"And when you think back you think how did it happen? You almost don't know. It's difficult to explain, it sounds really vague, but one minute it's not there, and the next you're thinking oh actually I'm getting something, and then it never feels like you've got a character, and then until you see it, you think oh yeah that's definitely... \u003cbr/\u003e Although it makes them nervous, all the actors enjoyed Leigh's way of working, especially when it came to the big scenes, as RUTH SHEEN explains: \"We were never allowed to discuss it with each other or any of the others out of the rehearsal room; and actually it makes it much more fun, you know because if you play that little game now it's, it works, because when you meet in an improvisation you don't know what they're gonna say to you and they don't know what they're gonna say, what you're gonna say back. And it works, because you know the whole thing is, I don't know what you're gonna ask us, you don't really know what we're gonna say; and nor do we.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnd it an effective way of working - 'All or Nothing' is already leading the poll of critics in one of the daily Cannes trade papers - but he is up against stiff competition for his second Palm d'Or. Critics say the films shown toward the end of the competition tend to win, and that makes 'The Pianist', the film from Roman Polanski, one of the front runners. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are few places more suited to the lifestyle of an secret agent like James Bond 007 than Cannes during the film festival, when the town is taken over by beautiful women, rich players and fast cars. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd so it was that Brosnan, in true Bond style, transferred from jet to luxury yacht before being greeted by a wall of the world's media. Accompanied by long-time partner Keely Shaye Smith Brosnan was the star guest of the MTV party at the amazing cliff top villa of designer Pierre Cardin. \u003cbr/\u003eCelebrating Bond's 40th anniversary the MTV party boasted a casino, music from Soul II Soul, enough free alcohol to float an ocean liner and 1,200 movers, shakers and hangers on from Cannes.\u003cbr/\u003eCardin's Palais Bulles (Bubble Palace), a giant homage to 60s architecture and science fiction, was sight to behold for most of the guests. \u003cbr/\u003eThe octogenarian designer was less easily impressed, however, and pointed out that having 1,200 people over was nothing new, special or exciting for him.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the critical and publicity coup scored by 'Shrek' last year, Dreamworks SKG and Cannes selectors have decided to repeat the successful formula - selecting the horse based epic 'Spirit' to play in this year's competition.\u003cbr/\u003eSince Toy Story in 1995, animation has enjoyed revived interest, with recent films like 'Shrek', 'Monster's Inc' and 'Ice Age' continuing the boom\u003cbr/\u003eFor Katzenberg, who puts the K in SKG, 'Spirit' was a chance to update the tradition of using animals to tell stories - and allows the audience to hear the fable straight from the horse's mouth (so to speak).\u003cbr/\u003eCannes was treated to a rare feat of creative endeavor when Canadian rock singer BRYAN ADAMS and German composer HANS ZIMMER played extracts from the Spirit soundtrack they collaborated on.\u003cbr/\u003eAdams, who broke his hand in a motorbike accident in London before coming to Cannes, said working with Zimmer allowed him to use more than two chords in his music.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile 'Shrek' failed to win the Palm D'or, the positive buzz and publicity generated by Canes helped propel it to world wide success, and an Academy Award at the Oscars.\u003cbr/\u003eSpirit follows the adventures of a wild and rambunctious mustang stallion as he journeys through the untamed American frontier. When he encounters man for the first time, Spirit defies being broken, even as he develops a remarkable friendship with a young Lakota brave named Little Creek. \u003cbr/\u003eWhether the equestrian
