investigating the extent of the problem, and whether it is linked to climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eBeaches of the northern Brazilian state of Ceara are under threat from the sea. \u003cbr/\u003eRobson Barros runs a restaurant  in the town of  Icarai, lying just 20 minutes from the state capital of Fortaleza.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that the number of tourists has dropped as the beaches have eroded.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the local government has asked the University of Ceara to research the extent of the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eJeovah Meireles, a professor of geography at the university, says that Ceara's location on Brazil's northeastern coast means that many weather systems converge off shore, \" it's an area of extreme environmental complexity.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe study focuses on the 356 miles (540 kms) of Ceara's coastline.\u003cbr/\u003eIt aims to identify priority areas for monitoring, protection and sustainable re-planning.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the far west it will take into account Jericoacoara beach, often touted as one of most beautiful on the planet. \u003cbr/\u003eIts 100 foot (30 metres) high dune is constantly changing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe neighbouring village of Tatajuba, a former fishing community, has disappeared under growing sand dunes over the past 50 years.\u003cbr/\u003eNear the state capital of Fortaleza new beaches are appearing  just off the shore.\u003cbr/\u003eJader Morais, head of Geosciences and Oceanology at the University of Ceara, is leading the coastal erosion study. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the studies will try to determine if rising sea levels due to climate change are a factor in coastal erosion in the region.\u003cbr/\u003eJose Brabo, Meteorologist from FUNCEME, the Ceara Foundation of Meteorology and Water Resources, says the environmental studies and long range weather forecasts will allow the authorities to be better prepared for extreme weather events.\u003cbr/\u003eJeovah Meireles says that human activity and overpopulation are having a negative impact.\u003cbr/\u003eBut coastal residents are dependent on fishing and tourism for their income.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is hoped that this study will help the local
