He died in a time where hope brought us a long way.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMichael Jackson was so distraught over persistent insomnia in recent months that he pleaded for a powerful sedative, despite warnings it could be harmful, said a health care provider who was working with the singer as he prepared for a series of farewell concerts.\u003cbr/\u003eCherilyn Lee, a registered nurse who specialises in nutritional counselling, said she repeatedly rejected his demands for the drug, Diprivan, which is given intraveneously. \u003cbr/\u003eBut a frantic phone call she received from Jackson four days before his death led her to believe he had somehow obtained Diprivan, or some other powerful sedative.\u003cbr/\u003eLee was in Florida on June 21 when she was called by a member of Jackson's staff.\u003cbr/\u003e\"And he called me and said ... he was very frantic and he said 'Michael needs to see you right away, can you come and see him?' And I said 'what's wrong?'  And I could hear Michael in the background: 'Tell her. Tell her that one side of my body is hot, is hot, and one side of my body is cold, it's very cold.'\u003cbr/\u003eLee said she advised him to go to hospital straight away.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At that point I knew that somebody had given him something that hit that central nervous system because you know, that's all he wanted, was to sleep. But he was in trouble.  He was in trouble Sunday,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003eJackson didn't go to the hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eHe died on June 25 after suffering cardiac arrest.\u003cbr/\u003eAutopsies have been held, but an official cause of death is not expected for several weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing Jackson's death, a portrait emerged of an artist who consumed a daily cocktail of painkillers, sedatives and antidepressants. \u003cbr/\u003eLee said that Jackson had expressed opposition to recreational drug use, but was tortured by sleep deprivation.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral months ago, Jackson had begun badgering Lee to get him Diprivan, also known as Propofol. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is an intravenous anesthetic drug widely used in hospital operating rooms to induce unconsciousness. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is generally given through an IV needle in the hand.  \u003cbr/\u003eCompared with similar drugs, patients given Propofol take less time to wake up, and they report waking up more clear-headed and feeling more refreshed.\u003cbr/\u003eAccidental suicides linked with abuse have been reported because the powerful drug has a very narrow therapeutic window - it doesn't take doses much larger than those medically recommended to stop breathing, hence it is always administered by a trained anaesthesiologist. \u003cbr/\u003eAn overdose that stops breathing can result in a build-up of carbon dioxide, causing the heart to beat erratically, and leading to cardiac arrest.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause it's used intravenously and is not available from pharmacies as a prescription drug, abuse cases have involved anaesthesiologists, nurses or other hospital staff who can get access to the drug.\u003cbr/\u003eLee said she told Jackson it was not a safe medicine to take, and \"and I said 'the problem with you telling me you want to be knocked out' - those were his words - 'is that you might not wake up the next morning.  You don't want to do that.' \u003cbr/\u003eLee said Jackson waved away her warnings about it: \"He said 'no, my doctor said it's safe. It works quick and it's safe.  As long as somebody's here to monitor me and wake me up, I am going to be OK'.\"\u003cbr/\u003eJackson said it had been given to him before, but he didn't want to discuss the circumstances or identify the doctor involved.\u003cbr/\u003eThe next day, she brought a copy of the Physician's Desk Reference book to show him the section on Diprivan, and its side-effects. \u003cbr/\u003ePreviously, Lee herself had spent the night with Jackson to monitor him while he slept. She gave him some herbal remedies and stayed in a corner chair in his vast bedroom.\u003cbr/\u003eShe said that Jackson only slept for three and a half hours before jumping up and looking at Lee, his eyes wide open. \u003cbr/\u003eShe said he had told her that all he wanted was to be able to sleep for eight hours.\u003cbr/\u003eLee, 56, is licensed as a registered nurse and nurse practitioner in California, according to the state Board of Registered Nursing's Web site. \u003cbr/\u003eShe attended Los Angeles Southwest College and the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Sciences in Los Angeles.\u003cbr/\u003eHer clinic, Nutrimed Integrated Healthcare, is in Inglewood, California, where she administers vitamin, herbal and other treatments. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, in New York on Tuesday, thousands of Michael Jackson fans converged on Harlem's famed Apollo Theatre for a public tribute to the performer.\u003cbr/\u003eAt 5:26 p.m., the time that East Coast fans learned that Jackson had died last Thursday, fans were invited to take a moment's silence to think about the singer.\u003cbr/\u003eFans filed through the Apollo all afternoon, clutching photographs, cheering and dancing to Jackson's music at the legendary venue that launched the one-time child star's career.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Reverend Al Sharpton told the crowd that Jackson broke down barriers because \"he was born in a time that we had little hope.
