died\u003cbr/\u003eaboard the space shuttle Columbia but added that they were now trying to move forward.\u003cbr/\u003eIn their first public comments on the shuttle disaster, the three crew members also said their emotions seemed to be amplified in orbit because of the sense of solitude.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When you're up here this long, you can't just bottle up your emotions and cope with it all the time,\" the commander of the space station, American astronaut Kenneth Bowersox, said from orbit.\u003cbr/\u003eBowersox said he and his crew, American Donald Pettit and Russian Nikolai Budarin, listened in on last Tuesday's memorial at Johnson Space Center in honour of the seven Columbia astronauts.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the ceremony, Bowersox said they had rung the space station's ship's bell seven times in tribute to their fallen friends.\u003cbr/\u003eThe three have been in orbit since November and were supposed to return to Earth next month aboard a space shuttle. \u003cbr/\u003eBut all shuttle flights are on indefinite hold because of the Columbia disaster.\u003cbr/\u003eAll three said that they were prepared to remain in orbit as long as necessary, even up to a year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe space station is equipped with a three-man lifeboat at all times and NASA is considering having them return in it, if their replacements arrive via another Russian Soyuz spacecraft.\u003cbr/\u003eRussian and US space officials meanwhile continue to ponder ways in which to run the international space station now that space shuttles have been grounded.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past, both Russian supply ships and US shuttles have regularly adjusted the station's orbit, which gradually decreases under the impact of the earth's gravity.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with shuttle missions suspended during the investigation into the Columbia disaster, the Russian ships have become the sole link to the outpost. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, James Newman, NASA's coordinator in Russia, on Tuesday said that NASA could not purchase any extra Russian ships because of US legislation prohibiting such practice in connection to Russia's cooperation with Iran.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Iran Nonproliferation Act of 2000 bars \"extraordinary payments\" to Russia's space agency for the station unless the US confirms Russia has not transferred missile technology or mass destruction arms to Iran in the previous year. \u003cbr/\u003eRussia denies its cooperation with Tehran, which includes construction of a nuclear reactor, can advance Iranian nuclear weapons or missile programmes.\u003cbr/\u003eNewman said NASA and the Russians were working closely \"to understand what we can do with the Progress and Soyuz flights that are already scheduled\".\u003cbr/\u003eRussian space officials said last week that a Soyuz would carry a replacement crew to the station in late April, but NASA said it hasn't been decided how or when the current crew would return home.\u003cbr/\u003eNewman, a former astronaut who has been on four shuttle missions, warned that leaving the station temporarily unoccupied could jeopardise it.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the space officials continued their discussions, a Russian cargo ship fired its thrusters to push the international space station to a higher orbit on Tuesday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Progress M-47 cargo ship raised the
