Musharraf to reinstate the country's top judge. \u003cbr/\u003eMusharraf removed the Supreme Court's independent-minded chief justice on March 9, a move that sparked a political storm that is testing the military leader's eight-year hold on power. \u003cbr/\u003eWith Chief Justice Ifitkhar Mohammed Chaudhry facing a third hearing into allegations that he had abused his office, opposition parties and lawyers staged the latest in a series of demonstrations in front of the court in Islamabad's government district. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities deployed hundreds of police and paramilitary troops near the building and along neighbouring roads.\u003cbr/\u003eOne group of several hundreds demonstrators waving colourful party flags approached the white marble court building chanting slogans also including \"Down with Musharraf.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe government says it has acted constitutionally in suspending Chaudhry and has tasked a three-member panel of judges to examine whether Chaudhry abused his position by securing unwarranted privileges and bullying officials to give his son a police job.\u003cbr/\u003eIt insists that the police, who have also set up roadblocks around Islamabad to thwart past demonstrations, are simply enforcing the law.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, critics accuse Musharraf, who seized power in a 1999 coup, of seeking to tame the court to ensure it doesn't stand in the way of his continued rule.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States, which considers Musharraf a key ally in its fight against terrorism, and the European Union have both expressed concern about the standoff and its implications for parliamentary elections due at the end of 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eMusharraf is expected to seek re-election as president from the outgoing legislature, a move the
