This is most likely due to the lungs that were not fully formed, that were impeding the flow of the proper absorption of oxygen, which then lead to the death of the liver cells.\"\u003cbr/\u003e10. Various of Mei Xhang lounging on rock \u003cbr/\u003eA veterinarian at Washington's National Zoo says a liver problem and underdeveloped lungs were to blame for the death last month of a 6-day-old giant panda cub.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cub, believed to be female, was born on September 16. \u003cbr/\u003eZoo officials and panda fans were devastated by its death less than a week later. \u003cbr/\u003eChief veterinarian Suzan Murray told a news conference on Thursday in Washington DC that the cub's cause of death was liver necrosis, or the death of liver cells. \u003cbr/\u003eMurray says the cub's lungs were also underdeveloped and likely didn't provide enough oxygen to the liver.\u003cbr/\u003eThe zoo also offered a glimpse of panda mother Mei Xiang in her yard on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eShe strolled outside, found a frozen, fruity ice treat and turned her back to a gathering crowd to enjoy breakfast.\u003cbr/\u003eThe birth was a surprise because it hadn't been clear whether Mei Xiang was still fertile.\u003cbr/\u003eZoo scientists are trying to learn more about how common liver and lung defects develop in newborn pandas.\u003cbr/\u003eZoo keepers have said Mei Xiang took careful care of the cub. \u003cbr/\u003eIt weighed only about 4 ounces when it died. \u003cbr/\u003eThe tiny hairless, helpless creatures can be easily crushed, but the cub had no sign of injury. \u003cbr/\u003eThe zoo has received an outpouring of cards and letters from around the world and some donations for conservation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe zoo has a five-year agreement with China to
