Various of priests praying\u003cbr/\u003eTwo American priests were consecrated as Anglican bishops in Kenya on Thursday - the latest in a string of conservative priests who are defecting to African churches in a dispute over homosexuality.\u003cbr/\u003eBill Atwood of Texas and William Murdoch of Massachusetts left the Episcopal Church - the US branch of the worldwide Anglican Communion - because it allows the ordination of gay priests. \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking before the consecration ceremony in Nairobi on Thursday, Atwood said: \"American males who are homosexually active have a life span that is three decades shorter than the norm.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"How can a church say: 'You are precious, we care about you, we love you, we want the best for you, and now we want to bless behaviour that causes you to die three decades early?'\", he added.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Reverend Drexel Gomez, primate of the West Indies, addressed the congregation in saying: \"It is a division of opinion between those of us who firmly believe that homosexual practice violates the order of life given by god in holy scriptures, and those who seek by various means to justify what scripture does not honour.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe spiritual head of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, has asked African archbishops not to consecrate US priests to help avoid a schism. \u003cbr/\u003eKenyan Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi said there had been no direct communication with Williams about Thursday's ceremony.\u003cbr/\u003eWilliams has no direct authority to force a compromise because each Anglican province is self-governing\u003cbr/\u003eThe Anglican Communion has moved toward the brink of splitting since the Episcopal Church consecrated its first openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, in 2003.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the fellowship's 77 million members are based in the developing world, where homosexuality is strongly discouraged and often illegal.\u003cbr/\u003eA split would spell financial hardship for the communion because the small but wealthy Episcopal Church, which has 2.4 (m) million members, provides a significant chunk of the fellowship's budget.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth sides of the argument say the issue goes deeper than simple acceptance of homosexuality. Liberal Anglicans say the Bible's message of tolerance means there should be a place for everyone in church, but conservatives say that is bending the word of god to fit fashion. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter Thursday's ceremony, Atwood and Murdoch will return home to minister to their congregations with Nzimbi as their spiritual adviser. \u003cbr/\u003eBecause they are no longer affiliated with the Episcopal Church, the men will have to find new church buildings and funding in the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eNext month, Episcopal bishops will meet to decide whether they should agree to demands that they unequivocally pledge by September 30 not to consecrate another openly gay bishop.
