to incest but insisted he was innocent of murder and enslavement charges.\u003cbr/\u003eJosef Fritzl hid his face behind a blue file folder as a judge began trial proceedings under heavy security in St. Poelten, 40 miles (65 kilometres) west of Vienna.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 73-year-old pleaded guilty to incest and false imprisonment, but only partially guilty to charges of coercion and rape. \u003cbr/\u003eHe pleaded not guilty to murder by neglect and enslavement.\u003cbr/\u003eAt an afternoon news conference, a court spokesman said Fritzl's partial admissions of guilt on the rape and coercion counts would become clearer over the course of the proceedings. \u003cbr/\u003eCourt spokesman, Franz Cutka suggested it might be a defence tactic to lessen the sentence.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also confirmed that the first day's proceedings included transmission of a pre-recorded video testimony from Fritzl's daughter, Elisabeth.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities say Fritzl imprisoned and repeatedly raped his daughter for 24 years in a cramped and windowless dungeon he built beneath the family's home in the western town of Amstetten. \u003cbr/\u003eInvestigators say DNA tests show he fathered her six surviving children.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother child died in infancy and that prompted the murder charge. \u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors contend the baby boy might have survived if Fritzl had arranged for medical care.\u003cbr/\u003eFritzl faces up to life in prison if convicted of murder. \u003cbr/\u003eIncest, by contrast, is punishable by up to one year in prison. \u003cbr/\u003eHe could face up to 20 years behind bars if convicted of enslavement and up to 15 for a rape conviction.\u003cbr/\u003eThe conviction with the highest penalty will determine the length of the sentence.\u003cbr/\u003eJosef Leitner, a former tenant of Fritzl's said he hoped Fritzl will \"get the punishment that he deserves.\" \u003cbr/\u003eLeitner lived in Fritzl's house in the 1990s when Fritzl's daughter Elisabeth, was already being held in the cellar. \u003cbr/\u003eLeitner - who was not invited to be a witness, but did speak to police - said he hopes Elisabeth and the children can lead a comfortable life in the future. \u003cbr/\u003eSecurity was tight in St. Poelten on Monday, with police imposing a no-fly zone above the courthouse to dissuade reporters from renting helicopters for aerial shots - and to prevent prison breaks from the jail next door where Fritzl has been held in pre-trial detention.\u003cbr/\u003eOutside the court protesters gathered to express their anger. \u003cbr/\u003eProtester Gerold Zeiner criticised the youth office for failing to pick up on the number of children who kept getting dropped off at the Fritzl house. \u003cbr/\u003eAlso taking part in the protest was controversial stand-up comedian Hubsi Kramar, who staged a performance with theatre director Patrick Huber to protest superficial media coverage and insufficient protection of victims of child abuse. \u003cbr/\u003eKramar is the star of a Fritzl satire called \"Pension F.\" - German for \"F.'s Bed and Breakfast\" which is intended to criticise reporters for being too focused on ratings to appreciate the vulnerability of victims and truly listen to what they have to say. \u003cbr/\u003eKramar said from outside the court that victims need more protection.
