Pull focus of tomato plat leaves
A German company is hoping to turn the cities of the future green with aquaponics, a farming system which allows fish and plants to grow in symbiosis.
This tomato plant looks like any other in the world.
Growing in containers surrounded by water in which tiny perch swim.
The plants absorb the nutrients excreted by the fish as waste.
The Berlin -based company Efficient City Farming (ECF) has developed the Container Farm, which they hope will be a step in the direction of a more sustainable urban living.
Currently the vast majority of all fish and vegetables eaten in cities around the world have travelled long distances.
Fish often comes from ocean-based fish farms that environmentalists claim are damaging the natural enviroment.
Vegetables are mostly grown in the countryside or in large greenhouses, often thousands of kilometres away from the stores where they are sold.
But in this small container in the heart of Berlin tomato plants are growing on top of a fish tank, thanks to what ECF calls an Aquaponic system.
Nicolas Leschke, one of the three founders of ECF, explains how the system works:
"Aquaponic is a close circulatory system where the fish and the plants can grow in a symbiosis. That means that the fish produces the fertiliser for the plants and the plants clean the water for the fish."
Essentially all an urban farmer would need to add is fish food for the production; the rest is taken care of by Mother Nature.
Aquaponic systems are not in themselves new; various varieties of the system have been in development for almost two decades.
But it is only recently that the system has become efficient enough, and easy enough to operate, that it is possible to sell the system to businesses and consumers.
ECF's container farms are large enough to grow about 200 perch per year and to hold over hundred plants.
An ideal, and often unused space to put them, is rooftops, the developers say.
According to Leschke the carbon dioxoide (CO2) savings could be huge if this type of food production would kick off on a large scale.
"We have to live more efficiently and we have to produce less CO2 and urban farming is a step in this direction", he says "Because you produce locally in the city there is no transportation for the produce, only the transportation from the urban farm to the table. So there is a quick and easy way to save CO2,"
The symbiotic relationship between the fish and the plants also means that the container farms are practically CO2 neutral, according to Leschke.
"What is nice with a system like the one we have here is that we are can be CO2 neutral. In the fish there is CO2 which you release in the production but CO2 is also a fertiliser for the plants, they capture the CO2 and because of that you have a CO2 neutral production of both the fish and the vegetables," he explains.
Scientists at the Leibniz institute in Berlin developed ECF's Aquaponic system, which allows the urban farmers to control the nitrate levels in the water to maximise the production of both the fish and the vegetables.
Leschke is hoping that the first businesses to invest in container farms are restaurants that can use the farms as a marketing tool, by for example only serving fish produced in their backyard or on their roof.
He also hopes large supermarket chains will take up the technology and construct larger versions of the farm on their roofs.
But the financial viability of the idea is remote.
The price per square meter of land in a city is much higher than in the countryside, so urban produce might never be as cheap as the traditional rural produce.
Professor Christian Ulrichs is the head of the Faculty for Agriculture and Horticulture at Berlin's Humboldt University.
They are working on a number of projects to make farming more efficient, they are also planning on building their own Aquaponic system, although he agrees the future remains uncertain.
"The system, with the current costs and economic date, is financially difficult," he says. "You have to hope that idealists will pay more for the produce because they like to know where the products come from. On a long term the costs will most likely go down and the system might become financially viable. But for this to happen you have to increase the scale of the production and maybe move the production further away from the cities and then you have to ask yourself, should we have this system to produce food close to the cities or for economic reasons?"
Leschke acknowledges that the fish and vegetables produced in the container farms may never compete in price with vegetables produced on a mass level in large countryside farms.
One container farm will set you back around 35,000 (US$43,780) and a lot of fish and tomatoes will have to be produced before that investment has been recovered.
However, he says costs will come down as they make larger farms.
A 7,000 square metre farm will be built next year.
Leschke thinks the future of the system rests with the way consumers think about what goes in their mouths.
"A rethink by the consumers is needed. They should think, 'where do my vegetables come from? Where do the tomatoes come from, are they regional which is good or did they come from 3000 kilometres away?'
