Close of Paddington bear Huachipa (near Lima)\u003cbr/\u003eThe popular children's book character, Paddington Bear - according to the author, Michael Bond, came \u003cbr/\u003efrom \"darkest Peru\" .\u003cbr/\u003eToday, in South America, it's very hard to find the spectacled bear or Andean bear, the only type of bear on the continent. \u003cbr/\u003eJust as a new Paddington story book goes on sale to celebrate his fiftieth anniversary, conservationists in Peru want to highlight the precarious situation of the spectacled bear.\u003cbr/\u003ePeru's Lima zoo has two adult spectacled bears, a male - Yogi - and a female - called Hanna, who share a common area.\u003cbr/\u003eThey like to take naps, dive in their small swimming pool, and wait for the delivery of their daily fruit and vegetables.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth bears get along fine, though the male bear is greedy and sometimes takes advantage of his size over the female and steals her food.\u003cbr/\u003eSpectacled bears no longer exist in Paraguay but can still be found in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. \u003cbr/\u003eEnormously famous in the UK and elsewhere, Paddington bear remains largely unknown in Latin American countries.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd like Paddington, the spectacled bear cub, Uku, arrived in Huachipa zoo near Lima from \"darkest Peru\" less than two months ago.\u003cbr/\u003eHe quietly plays with his caretaker while he curiously observes the cameraman that entered his cage.\u003cbr/\u003eUku, short for Ukumari or Ukuku, the aymara word for the spectacled bear, was brought to the zoo after a phone call alerted the INRENA (National Institute of Natural Resources) of his situation.\u003cbr/\u003e\" This cub comes from a community in the less accessible part of Huanico, in the mountain side, which borders the Maranon River. At the end, we arrived to a village with no more than 20 or 30 houses, and that was the centre...then we had to go a bit further away to a smaller town, upper in the mountains and there they had the bear in a old house,\" explained the veterinary.\u003cbr/\u003eJust as Paddington Bear got lost in the train station, Uku got lost in the forest.\u003cbr/\u003eLocals told the veterinary how some fishermen stumbled across a female spectacled bear and her two cubs when they worked in a lake.\u003cbr/\u003eEach party got scared and run away, but while the mother and one of the cubs run into the woods, Uku fell into the water from where the fishermen rescued him.\u003cbr/\u003eThey brought him to their village and later sold him to a man in a nearby village for little more than 150 soles ( 55 USD)  who kept him in his house, tied as a dog, only feeding him corn and leftovers.\u003cbr/\u003e\" When he arrived here he was just a big head, bones and skin. He was in terrible condition, his weight was between 8 and 10 kilos which for an animal of his age, he had one or two months at the time, he was too thin. Now after a month with us, we brought him to get weighted and he has duplicated that weight, he has 23 kilos and quite a good muscular condition\", the veterinary said.\u003cbr/\u003eUku underwent a full medical checkup and a beauty therapy on the day AP television was there. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was weighed, had his blood tested, and his heart rate measured. The zoo staff took his biometrical details and he was given anti-parasites sprays.\u003cbr/\u003eThen the veterinarians checked his claws, cleaned his teeth and proceeded to comb his fur and cut out the damaged portions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe staff had to sedate Uku with a dart, and he wasn't exactly thrilled about it.  \u003cbr/\u003eNow that his weight is almost normal, the tranquilisers don't have the same effect as before, and the veterinary has to keep holding him down because Uku moves and wants to see what is going on in the clinic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe staff are very happy with Uku's progress, and they are aware that Uku's species is very rare.\u003cbr/\u003eUnfortunately Uku cannot go back to the forest, as he is already used to humans providing him with food.\u003cbr/\u003eThe veterinarians of the zoo believe that if released, Uku would go and search for people to get his daily food.\u003cbr/\u003eSoon Uku will leave his cage and go and play with the big spectacled bears in the zoo.\u003cbr/\u003eThe staff believe that the female bear they already have might be more friendly to Uku in the beginning, even though she hasn't given birth to cubs yet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe problems might come with the large male bear.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's the Alpha male, but in a couple of years Uku will be as big as him and might challenge his superiority.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts have not been able to say how many wild spectacled bears are left. Hard as it may be to find a Paddington bear in Peru, it is even a harder task to find the \"real Paddington bear\", the spectacled bear or Andean bear, the only type of bear living in South America. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the past few years the tourism industry has developed at a high speed in Peru with plenty of Europeans, including many British people, visiting the country to discover the Inca ruins of Machu Pichu or taking part in adventure trips.\u003cbr/\u003eBusinesswomen like Frances-Ann McKey see an opportunity to make the Paddington Bear more Peruvian. \u003cbr/\u003e\" We all know that the Paddigton bear is a tradition that comes from an English children's book which says that the Paddington bear comes out of Peru, goes to Paddington Station and there he gets lost and his stories start with that.
