Armed police officers surrounding suspect\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack on the US embassy in Sarajevo by a gunman believed to be a follower of an ultraconservative Islamic sect exposed Bosnia's inability to deal with religious extremists who penetrated the country during its 1992-5 war, experts told The Associated Press this week.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gunman is accused of shooting at the embassy building for at least 30 minutes on Friday, wounding a policeman guarding the facility, before a police sniper immobilised him with a shot in his leg.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attacker, identified by police as 23-year-old Mevlid Jasarevic, was known to Bosnian police as someone who had frequented one of the country's most isolated communities practicing extremely conservative branch of Islam alternatively referred to as Wahhabism and Salafism.\u003cbr/\u003eJasarevic hails from Novi Pazar, the administrative capital of the Muslim-populated southern Serbian region of Sandzak, also a Wahhabi stronghold. \u003cbr/\u003eBosnian terrorism expert Vlado Azinovic said the attack pointed to \"the dysfunctional state of Bosnia\" which \"does not have enough of internal capacities to deal decisively with security threats like militant Salafi groups\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you talk to law enforcement officials, they would tell you that they could deal with this problem decisively if there was political will, but unfortunately we have not seen that political will for way too long,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eSerbian police said Jasarevic was briefly arrested a year ago for brandishing \"a large knife\" during a visit by the US Ambassador to Serbia to Novi Pazar. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was reportedly deported in 2008 from Austria after a robbery in Vienna which is thought to be Europe's spiritual centre of Wahhabism.\u003cbr/\u003eWahhabism is an austere brand of Sunni Islam promoted by radicals, including the Taliban and al-Qaida fighters. The sect is rooted in Saudi Arabia and linked to religious extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe issue of Wahhabi influence is one of the most politically charged debates in Bosnia, with Bosnian Serbs maintaining there is a huge presence of Wahhabis in the country and Muslim Bosniaks downplaying the issue and at times claiming it does not exist.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a result, police complain they do not get sufficient support to prevent attacks such as Friday's one on the US embassy, or last year's bomb attack by a group of Wahhabis on a police station in the central town of Bugojno, which killed a policeman and injured several others.   \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Bosnia's intelligence agency, there are about three-thousand Wahhabis in Bosnia.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most carefully watched Wahhabi groups lives in virtual isolation in a remote northeastern village of Gornja Maoca.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is this group which is believed to have influenced Jasarevic, who visited the community on several occasions over the past two years.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing Friday's embassy attack, Bosnian political leaders pledged to fully support the country's legal and operational mechanisms for the fight against extremists. \u003cbr/\u003eBosnian police on Saturday launched a massive operation in Gornja Maoca with a convoy of police vehicles entering the village and officers wearing black masks and camouflage uniforms surrounding several houses.\u003cbr/\u003eThis was the second such raid in the village in a year.\u003cbr/\u003eNot missing a chance to crackdown against Muslims in Sandzak, Serbian police on Saturday also briefly detained 17 people who were alleged to be Jasarevic's associates.\u003cbr/\u003eThe presence of radical Muslims in the volatile region is linked to the advent of foreign fighters who joined Bosniak Muslims in their battle against the Serbs in Bosnia's 1992-95 war for independence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Islamic fighters were largely tolerated by the US and the West because of their opposition to late Serbia's strongman Slobodan Milosevic's quest to create \"Greater Serbia\" out of the former Yugoslav republics.\u003cbr/\u003eBut when the war ended they continued to penetrate Bosnia's shattered society.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Unfortunately, 20 years later these groups are not just imported, they are home grown and they combine a local context with a global agenda that Salafi groups are pursuing elsewhere in the world,\" Azinovic told The AP.\u003cbr/\u003eBut while radical Islamic groups are good at exploiting political instability and ethnic tensions in Bosnia, \"we are headed towards a direction in which we are going, probably, to have to choose between our human rights and our personal
