\"the Chongsanri Method.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut even this model collective farm has little modern machinery.\u003cbr/\u003eTeams of women wade barefoot through water and mud, bending over the bright green shoots of rice seedlings just as they would have done centuries ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe farm does have small rice transplanting machines, which sputter across some of the paddies loaded with seedlings, inserting them mechanically into the water and mud.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rice transplanting season at Chongsanri lasts from 12 to 25 May this year and farmers say they have to put in extra hours to get it done on time.\u003cbr/\u003eCity residents, from teenagers to grandparents, even from the privileged capital Pyongyang, are mobilised to go to farms to help out during with the rice transplanting.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Chongsanri's managers say they don't bring in outside help.\u003cbr/\u003eNorth Korean authorities have been tinkering with their agricultural system in a way that has caught the attention of the outside world over the past two years.\u003cbr/\u003eForeign analysts have been interested to draw comparisons with agricultural reforms made in China decades ago that presaged further reform.\u003cbr/\u003eIn trial areas, some North Korean farms say they no longer have fixed quotas to fulfil, and only have to pay back the state for the inputs, like land and fertiliser, that they have received from the state.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd a major national meeting of farm workers early this year, highlighted the \"field responsibility system\".\u003cbr/\u003eThat is intended as a stronger incentive for smaller groups of farmers to work harder and produce more by giving them a more direct stake in the collective's output.\u003cbr/\u003eThese strategies may be an attempt to get away from a past system where farmers saw no personal gain if their hard work disappeared into the collective fulfilment of a state quota.\u003cbr/\u003eBut North Korea resolutely avoids any mention of reform or opening, in agriculture just as much as in other areas of its economy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that North Korea might produce 1.9 (m) million tons of rice in 2014, the same as last year, which represented a slight increase over recent years.\u003cbr/\u003eChongsanri farm, near Pyongyang -
