It's a sense of timelessness. It's when a person  wants to send up the world. I think it's just that the Irish don't want to take life seriously.  There's enough serious nationalities and the Irish say why can't there be at least one  nation that doesn't take life so seriously. Life is funny, life can be fun and we enjoy life.  And I think people who are humourous enjoy life more\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Professor Des MacHale, Cork University\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor MacHale has been holding a summer school where the Irish joke has been  studied along with the limerick and the witticisms of Oscar Wilde and George Bernard  Shaw.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Irish joke goes back to 1650 when Irish immigrants were mocked in England  because of the way they looked and spoke.\u003cbr/\u003eSince the 1990s jokes about the Irish have been seen as racist but Professor MacHale  argues that this type of humour is healthy.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he warns that telling the right number of jokes is a tough balancing act.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are two categories where it is dangerous -- a person who never jokes at all or a  person who jokes all the time. If you joke a hundred per cent of the time you're crazy.  But if you joke not at all, zero per cent of the time, you're equally crazy, it's something  in between. But Ireland I often say, it's the main course here, in other countries it's the  seasoning or the dessert but in Ireland it's the main course. And the trouble about being  a comedian in this country is you've got three and a half million in the opposition,  everybody you meet is a comedian and that's terribly tough. \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Professor Des MacHale, Cork University\u003cbr/\u003eThe class takes an academic look at humour.\u003cbr/\u003eBut plenty of time is given over to traditional Irish joke telling.\u003cbr/\u003eThe students have varied reasons for attending the class, but all have enjoyed their  time.\u003cbr/\u003eI think humour is very important to Irish people. It's a way of communicating with each  other.
