Various of sunset at Andoor island\u003cbr/\u003eTwo years after the tsunami swept through the tropical archipelago of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, aid groups say at least 50-thousand people still remain homeless.\u003cbr/\u003eThe islands are one of the world's greatest treasure houses of biodiversity, with a variety of flora and fauna and coral reefs home to millions of fish.\u003cbr/\u003eOfficial estimates indicate that the disaster left more than 1,800 islanders dead and more than 5,500 missing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe signs of economic revival are apparent - fishermen are back at work and some land destroyed by the tsunami waves has been reclaimed for farming.   \u003cbr/\u003eBut the signs of the calamity are visible too - dead shells are spread across what was once fertile farmland.\u003cbr/\u003eFarmers had lost thousands of hectares of rice and other crops after their land was inundated by salt water .\u003cbr/\u003eSurvivors and voluntary groups say the reconstruction and rehabilitation process in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been far from satisfactory.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say while the funds have been more than adequate, the rebuilding efforts have been haphazard and poorly directed. \u003cbr/\u003eFarmer Shri Singh says he has been promised a permanent house three kilometres from his farmland - a prospect that is worrying him as he cannot live away from his fields. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If I have to travel 3 kilometres to reach my field, how will I look after whatever is left of my crop? And I will not be able to keep my poultry and my cattle at the permanent shelter. I am a farmer after all,\" Singh said.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile there are more fishing boats than are needed, there is no sign of permanent shelters for those displaced by the killer waves.\u003cbr/\u003eQuestions are also being raised over the location, design and cost of housing planned by government.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo years on from the disaster, more than 9,700 families in the Islands are still living in inadequate temporary shelters.\u003cbr/\u003eA slow pace for efforts to move tsunami survivors into permanent housing has meant that thousands of people have been forced to continue living in temporary shelters with walls made of corrugated cardboards and tin sheets.\u003cbr/\u003eA report released by the voluntary group Action Aid says the government agencies must do more to involve survivors of the 2004 tsunami in decisions over the planning and building of new homes.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is the summer season in the islands and the people are in worst conditions there. reconstruction plans fail to recognise the diverse way of life of the tribal communities and are using inappropriate technology for disaster reconstruction . \u003cbr/\u003e\"They will be using engineered bamboo, bamboo walling and steel reinforcements - both of which are very inappropriate for Andamans and in my opinion it will not last beyond five years definitely,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say what is needed is an owner/driven construction plan, involving people at all stages in the process, from choosing where they want to live, to developing designs and selecting materials.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government however claims that local communities have been consulted in designing the permanent houses and also in decisions regarding the rehabilitation options for the displaced.\u003cbr/\u003eGovernment agencies also say that the bulk of tsunami reconstruction is set to take place in 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eThe official tsunami death toll across India was 10,749. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother 5,640 people - mostly in the Andaman and Nicobar islands - are listed as missing and presumed dead.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
