You don't know, maybe your parents' friends died here and it's all absorbed with the blood of soldiers from both sides so you come with some sort of respect for this place. Wide of deserted structures\u003cbr/\u003eA deserted former Syrian army base just kilometres from Syria has been transformed into a pop-up art gallery for Israeli artists. \u003cbr/\u003eThe result is art deeply influenced by military themes and the ever present threat of war. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's an abandoned building that is being given a temporary facelift with art.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut it's not just any deserted structure. These artists are taking advantage of a former Syrian army base to create and exhibit their works. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are inevitably drawing inspiration from the base and its surroundings in the Golan Heights - the site of battles between Israel and its northern neighbour and mere kilometres from the conflict in Syria. \u003cbr/\u003eWhat remains here are cracked outer walls and worn down interiors - a blank canvas for these artists. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We walked around and we saw the amazing buildings and we thought what can we do with it? And me, dealing with art, I thought it's the perfect place for an art exhibition and even more, to keep it on the walls and let each artist talk about the place and the history and what's going on here as he sees it, by his point of view,\" says  Oren Fischer, one of two organisers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project brings together 15 artists from across the country to the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau which Israel occupied from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael's army waged intense battles in the area and with its victory, Syria was forced to retreat, leaving behind dozens of these beige barracks, once used as bases. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the artists are residents of northern Israel and have experienced the wars there firsthand.\u003cbr/\u003eArtist Yonatan Gal says he remembers sitting in a shelter with his family when he was two years old during the 1967 war. He is familiar with the landscape in the Golan, but had never exhibited work in a place like this. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It has been amazing to approach these interiors, which I have seen before, in another context, that of art. They have something inspiring in them, something that arouses memories, and thoughts and imagination and to think that there were really people and Syrian soldiers and officers who lived here,\" he says .\u003cbr/\u003eGal used the contours of what was once an enclosed space to create what is meant to look like a room in an asylum. \u003cbr/\u003eHe wanted to highlight the absurdity and madness of war.\u003cbr/\u003eBy closing his subject in a room hedged in by barbed wire and an cardboard soldier aiming his rifle inside, he wanted to underscore the sense of limited freedom caused by wars.\u003cbr/\u003eTo enhance the effect, Gal positioned a stand mounted with the sight (viewfinder) of a grenade launcher, to allow visitors to peer at his project as if they were soldiers with the enemy in their sights.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the Golan Heights have been largely quiet since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, a few kilometres away lies Syria, a country being torn apart by civil war - a conflict that also weighed heavily on the artists' imaginations.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The surroundings here are crazy and what's happening in Syria, I think it's affecting everybody, conscious(ly) and non-conscious(ly). We didn't want the exhibit to be political in one point of view but it's irresistible,\" says  Fischer.\u003cbr/\u003eFischer used a hole in the wall to serve as a head. He placed a stuffed army uniform beneath it to create a soldier whose head is literally undetachable from the surroundings.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile much of the art being exhibited is tinged with military influences, other artists stayed away from the politics. \u003cbr/\u003eOne artist used yarn to create a tree on one the walls, whereas another well-known Israeli street artist stuck to his typical child-like stencil-art. \u003cbr/\u003eThe history of the place touched artist Gidi Gilam. His mural shows a masked figure meant to look like a militant, yet he is wearing a uniform similar to the one worn by Israel's army. Another drawing depicts Israel's celebrated military leader Moshe Dayan bruised and battered, his iconic eye patch decorated with a star.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a weird feeling, I don't know, it's a very difficult feeling. We are trying to say something which is reflective of our generation and our feeling about what happened, about the history,\" he says . \u003cbr/\u003eGilam says his caricatures are meant to strip some of the heroism from politicians and military leaders to show their vulnerability. This in a bid to have Israelis question the role these people play in their society. \u003cbr/\u003eThe artists intend to keep their creations on these walls once they leave the Golan Heights, when these buildings will be abandoned yet again.
