And when I heard the description, I was concerned that it was a severe complication of a minor head injury, which can happen. It emphasizes the need to use a helmet, even for beginners. I use a helmet when I go skiing, my kids use a helmet when we ski. I think it's becoming a critically important way of protecting yourself. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Neil Martin/Chair of Neurological Surgery, UCLA Medical Center, on the rarity of a simple fall causing massive brain injury: "It's profoundly unusual for a minor head injury as was described to result in a life-threatening medical crisis. But falling even from a standing position is a six-foot fall as far as your head is concerned. So you can get a tremendous impact if you fall unprotected or fall on your back and your head whiplashes into the pavement or hard snow. So it's possible to get a severe injury even from what ostensibly looks like a mild fall. However, in a case like this, one has to be concerned that there may be something else going on. Maybe there was a pre-existing condition that was aggravated or triggered by a minor fall, like a brain aneurysm. Maybe the fall itself was the result of a medical problem, like leaking from a brain aneurysm. And the fall was not the problem. The initial event triggered the fall."
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Neil Martin/Chair of Neurological Surgery, UCLA Medical Center, on how a fall can cause bleeding inside the brain: "The skull is hard, the brain is soft. When there's an injury, the skull stops moving, when a fall results in one hitting the ground, but the brain continues moving inside the skull and it collides with the inner surface of the skull. That trauma can either cause a bruise, a contusion on the brain, that can enlarge or cause severe pressure. That impact can tear blood vessels associated with the brain. And that could be the source of bleeding. That can build up rapidly or even more slowly over a period of hours."
12.
