The details of the registry...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eA human rights group in Stockholm, Sweden, has criticised police for compiling a secret registry of more than 4,000 Roma people, and claims the list is based on ethnicity rather than criminal association. \u003cbr/\u003eThe details of the registry collated by police, which includes around 1-thousand Roma children, was revealed by a Swedish newspaper in a report last week. \u003cbr/\u003eThe police department in the southern Swedish district of Skane claims the registers were created by local officers as part of an investigation into violent criminal activity, but were wrongly expanded beyond their purpose and came to include Roma from all over Sweden. \u003cbr/\u003eThe journalist behind the revelation says the file was deliberately created as a register of Roma people - sometimes referred to as gypsies. \u003cbr/\u003eMarcello Demeter lives in an apartment building in Stockholm and found out last week that he and his wife Susanne, their three children and at least three of their grandchildren were on the register. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They're making lists all the time for criminal people. But we're not criminal people. My grandchild was three-months-old when she was listed, what crimes did she do?\" the 42-year-old asked. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a list for mapping Roma people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe list has triggered an outcry over racial-profiling in a nation proud of its traditions of tolerance and social justice, and reminded many of the persecution that Roma people suffered under the Nazi regime.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He (Adolf Hitler) made a list of Roma people to register them and to check on them. And then he killed them all,\" Demeter said. \u003cbr/\u003eElisabeth Lofgren, a spokesperson for Amnesty International in Stockholm, called the list of Roma \"unacceptable\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's because of their ethnicity. And that is absolutely not correct to do that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLofgren says that while Sweden has been critical of other countries where Roma are stigmatised, it needs to take a close look at its own policies.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think it's important to know that Sweden is not without guilt here,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have been talking very much about other countries, especially in eastern Europe, but also France and Italy, where the stigmatisation is far worse, but still this is bad enough and I think that we should try and get rid of this first.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Roma people arrived to Europe from India in the 14th century and the first groups came to Sweden from Finland and Russia about 500 years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are an estimated 15-thousand to 20-thousand Roma people in Sweden today, including more recent arrivals from the former Yugoslavia and eastern Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eThroughout European history, Roma have been traded as slaves and faced harassment and discrimination. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers estimate between half-a-million and 1.5 (m) million Roma were killed alongside the Jews in the Holocaust.\u003cbr/\u003eSweden's police chief has said ethnic registers are illegal under Swedish law and the files are now the subject of several investigations.\u003cbr/\u003eJustice Minister Beatrice Ask has also publicly apologised for the file.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
