Iguana swimming\u003cbr/\u003ePolice in Ecuador's Galapagos Islands have employed sniffer dogs to help protect the archipelago's vulnerable ecosystems. \u003cbr/\u003eTen dogs, which were used by police in Colombia to sniff out drugs, will now help catch smugglers trying to take animal products and other items out of the islands.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dogs have been trained to sniff out seahorses, shells, and shark fins among other items. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring a training session on Sunday, police walked the dogs past luggage and vehicles, some of which had contraband deliberately hidden inside -  including shark fins and seahorses.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dogs immediately alerted police to the suspect items.\u003cbr/\u003eFernando Ortiz, spokesperson for Conservation International's Galapagos project, said sea cucumber and sea lion penises are also smuggled out from the Islands. \u003cbr/\u003eOrtiz said he hopes the dogs will help put an end to the smuggling which, given the high numbers of tourists visiting the islands, could have a lasting environmental impact.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dogs will also help keep tourists from taking banned items as souvenirs from the protected islands.\u003cbr/\u003eCaptain Diego Barriga, Head of the Ecuadorian National Environmental Police of the Galapagos Islands said many tourists take sand and shells from the islands' beaches, which cumulatively, has a big impact on the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dogs, which cost up to six thousand US dollars each, were donated by three non-governmental organisations: Sea Shepherd, Wildaid
