Various of Red Panda on tree\u003cbr/\u003eRed pandas bred in captivity are being successfully re-introduced into the wild in India.\u003cbr/\u003eConservationists at a zoo in Darjeeling have spent 12 years on a project to help protect the endangered species. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are an estimated 2500 Red Pandas in the world according to the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park,  but the number has been declining due to loss of habitat and hunting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Red Panda or Ailurus fulgens (meaning \"shining cat\") is a mostly herbivorous animal slightly larger than a domestic cat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe first published record of the panda came from a French zoologist, Frederic Cuvier in 1825, who gave it its scientific name Ailurus fulgens .\u003cbr/\u003eThe docile animal is found in the Himalayan mountainous stretch from Myanmar, Nepal, China, North Eastern India, Bhutan and Laos.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is chestnut red in colour, with cat-like ears and and bear-like paws of a darker blackish shade . \u003cbr/\u003eIt is an excellent tree climber and spends most of its time roosting in the trees except when it goes in search of food.\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost wholly vegetarian, it survives mainly on fresh bamboo leaves and fruit.\u003cbr/\u003eWildlife experts say the Red Pandas are the least aggressive animals to have survived in the wild because their habitat is an inaccessible terrain covered by bamboo forests on high altitudes.\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite being protected internationally the red panda remains highly endangered.\u003cbr/\u003eConservationists estimate that there are 2500 Red Pandas left in the world. Numbers have declined due to habitat fragmentation and hunting.\u003cbr/\u003eProject Red Panda was launched in 1986 at the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling to help protect the endangered species.\u003cbr/\u003eA.K. Jha, Director of Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling says they have bred almost 48 genetically healthy red pandas after importing new bloodlines from Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eThe captive breeding project of the Darjeeling zoo is aided by scientific research and effective monitoring of the animals.\u003cbr/\u003eElectronic chips injected into the captive pandas allow the zoo researchers to keep track of their movement both within the zoo and when they are first released into the wild.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wild population of pandas around Darjeeling is at the Varshey Rhododendron Sanctuary, Neora Valley National Park and the Singalila National park.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pandas bred in captivity are initially \"soft released\" - kept within a large enclosure in the sanctuary to gradually acclimatise them to their surroundings.\u003cbr/\u003eWildlife activists say the protection of the wild habitat of the red panda is crucial to saving the species.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisations like the Association for Conservation and Tourism (ACT) are working towards ensuring that the local communities are involved in preserving the ecology of the area.\u003cbr/\u003ePromotion of eco-tourism related activities has provided an alternative livelihood to the villagers living near the forests which are also home to animals like the red panda. \u003cbr/\u003eACT is also developing a red panda circuit trail for tourists, which will take them through these villages.\u003cbr/\u003eVillage Hee in West Sikkim, situated near the Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary provides a breathtaking view of the Kanchenjunga mountain peak.\u003cbr/\u003eSikkim has declared the Red Panda its state animal -  a mascot for the state's unique wildlife. \u003cbr/\u003eVisitors are welcomed with traditional song and dance by the local people at the tourist lodge.\u003cbr/\u003eA sighting of a cuddly red panda lurking in the forest nearby completes the
