Wide of Mahbubey Alam, Attorney General, briefing media after verdict\u003cbr/\u003eOn July 15th 2013 a 91-year-old former chief of an Islamic party in Bangladesh was sentenced to 90 years in jail for crimes against humanity during the country's 1971 independence war, angering both supporters who said the trial was politically motivated and opponents who said he should be executed.\u003cbr/\u003eA special tribunal of three judges announced the decision against Ghulam Azam in a packed courtroom at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka, the nation's capital. \u003cbr/\u003eThe panel said the former leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party deserved capital punishment, but received a jail sentence instead because of his advanced age and poor health.\u003cbr/\u003eJunior Attorney General M.K. Rahman said Ghulam Azam had been tried on five charges, and all had been proved.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Tribunal came to the conclusion that he deserves highest penalty of death, said Rahman. \u003cbr/\u003e\"But considering his age and ailments in prison he has been awarded different terms of sentence. Totally a sentence of ninety years or until death in prison,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Professor Anwar Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, who was in court for the sentencing was disappointed that the death sentence had not been given.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We couldn't even accept the verdict of sentencing 90 years, considering his age. And the people of Bangladesh also won't accept this,\" he said\u003cbr/\u003eAzam was in the dock when the verdict was delivered, while protesters outside rallied to demand his execution. \u003cbr/\u003eBoth the defence and the prosecution said they will appeal.\u003cbr/\u003eAzam led Jamaat-e-Islami in then-east Pakistan in 1971 when Bangladesh became independent through a bloody war. \u003cbr/\u003eHe is among several Jamaat-e-Islami leaders convicted by a tribunal, formed in 2010 by the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to try those accused of collaborating with the Pakistani army in the war.\u003cbr/\u003eBangladesh says the Pakistani army killed 3 (m) million people and raped 200-thousand women during the nine-month war, and some 10 (m) million people took shelter across the border in India.\u003cbr/\u003eAzam led the party until 2000 and is still considered to be its spiritual leader. \u003cbr/\u003eJamaat-e-Islami claims his trial and others were politically motivated, which authorities deny. \u003cbr/\u003eThe party called for a nationwide shutdown after the tribunal announced on Sunday it would have the verdict Monday. \u003cbr/\u003eProtests stemming from previous verdicts have sometimes turned deadly.\u003cbr/\u003eOn July 15th, police clashed with party supporters in parts of Dhaka, while party activists set fire to a few vehicles, the Bengali-language Prothom Alo newspaper reported.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice fired rubber bullets to disperse an opposition procession in Dhaka's Jatrabari area, and some photographers and cameramen were injured in the chaos, the newspaper said. \u003cbr/\u003eSimilar violence was also reported in some other parts of the country, several TV stations said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has criticised the tribunal, saying it is intended to weaken the opposition. \u003cbr/\u003eJamaat-e-Islami is the main political ally of Zia's party.\u003cbr/\u003eOn September 17th Bangladesh's Supreme Court sentenced an opposition party leader to death for crimes against humanity during the nation's 1971 independence war against Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Jamaat-e-Islami party leader, Abdul Quader Mollah, was found guilty by a special war crimes tribunal in February and sentenced to life in prison.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth the defence and prosecution appealed against that sentence.\u003cbr/\u003eOn September 17th, a five-member panel ruled that Mollah be put to death for his role during the war.\u003cbr/\u003eThe panel found him guilty of ordering the killing of a family of four during a Pakistani army crackdown in Dhaka in March 1971.\u003cbr/\u003eAttorney General Mahbubey Alam said this was the final verdict and there was no option for another appeal.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said Mollah's family can seek presidential clemency.\u003cbr/\u003eDefence counsel Abdur Razzaq said his team was \"stunned\" by the decision.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are bound to obey the verdict. We respect the highest judicial institution of this country,\" he told reporters. \"But this verdict is faulty. We regret this and are stunned. We believe this verdict is contrary to fair justice.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMollah and his supporters say the case against him is politically motivated.\u003cbr/\u003eMollah's party is a key ally of the country's main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party headed by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, an archrival of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.\u003cbr/\u003eHasina formed the special tribunal in 2010 to try war crimes suspects.\u003cbr/\u003eBangladesh says Pakistani soldiers, aided by local collaborators, killed 3 (m) million people and raped 200-thousand women during the nine-month war.\u003cbr/\u003eZia has accused the government of using war crimes trials as a guise to weaken the opposition.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government denies the allegation and says it rose to power in 2008 with the prosecution of war crimes suspects as one of its key election pledges.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral other top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami have since been convicted of similar charges.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government says the trials are being held at an international standard.\u003cbr/\u003eBut New York-based Human Rights Watch has raised questions about the impartiality of
