UN flag\u003cbr/\u003eA top UN public health expert on Thursday warned that a new influenza pandemic was expected at any time and could kill anywhere between five and 150 (M) million people - depending on action taken now to control the bird flu epidemic sweeping through Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. David Nabarro of the World Health Organisation issued the warning at a news conference following his appointment as the new UN coordinator to lead a global drive to counter a human flu pandemic.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We expect the next influenza pandemic to come at any time now, and it's likely to be caused by a mutant of the virus that is currently causing bird\u003cbr/\u003eflu in Asia,\" he said in New York.\u003cbr/\u003eThe H5N1 strain of bird flu has swept through poultry populations in Asia since 2003, infecting humans and killing at least 65 people, mostly poultry\u003cbr/\u003eworkers, and resulting in the deaths of tens of (M) millions of birds. \u003cbr/\u003eThe virus does not pass from person to person easily, but experts believe this could change if the virus mutates.\u003cbr/\u003eNabarro also called on governments to take immediate steps to address the threat \u003cbr/\u003eHe said that with the almost certainty of another influenza pandemic soon, and with experts saying there is a high likelihood of the H5N1 virus\u003cbr/\u003emutating, it would be wrong to ignore the serious possibility of a global outbreak.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The avian flu epidemic has to be controlled if we are to prevent a human influenza pandemic,\" Nabarro said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 1918 influenza pandemic killed more than 40 (M) million people and there were subsequent pandemics in 1957 and 1968 which had lower death rates but caused great disruption, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a new pandemic, Nabarro said, \"the range of deaths could be anything between five and 150 (M) million,\" adding that \"our effectiveness will be directly measured in lives saved and the consequences for the world\".\u003cbr/\u003eUN Secretary-General Kofi Annan asked Navarro to take a leave from his current post as WHO's executive director for sustainable development and health environments to become the UN system's coordinator for avian and human influenza.\u003cbr/\u003eThe British physician will head a new office in New York coordinating UN efforts and supporting local, national, regional and global preparations for a potential human influenza pandemic with the aim of reducing the human toll and global disruption, a UN spokesman said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new office will work closely with WHO, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the Paris-based World Organisation for Animal Health and the\u003cbr/\u003eWorld Bank.\u003cbr/\u003eNabarro planned to travel to Washington on Friday to work with the US State Department on preparations for the first meeting of the International Partnership on Avian and Pandemic Influenza on October 7.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US initiative, announced by President George W. Bush at the UN summit on September 14, is designed to increase global readiness to deal with a human flu pandemic and to garner political will.\u003cbr/\u003eNabarro then planned to spend the next two weeks traveling in Asia before attending a meeting of health ministers in Canada on October 25.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause of the rapid spread of influenza, two key challenges will be getting governments
