government.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is raising concerns for many environmentalists who are looking to change legislation to prevent these electronics being dumped.    \u003cbr/\u003eTo ensure that toxins do not find their way into landfills, they are hoping that e-waste recycling centres will be the way to preserve the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US government estimates that Americans generate more than three-million tons of e-waste every year. \u003cbr/\u003eE-waste is anything electronic such as old computers, televisions and remote controls.\u003cbr/\u003eWith newer models of computers, televisions and  mobile phones regularly being created the amount of e-waste is predicted to grow. \u003cbr/\u003eA large percentage of e-waste contains a harmful range of hazardous substances and non-biodegradable materials.\u003cbr/\u003eGetting rid of old, unwanted electronic equipment continues to be a concern amongst environmental groups - many of whom have long pushed for more active recycling programmes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Sierra Club's Colorado Director, Susan LeFever says the key is to get consumers and manufacturers alike to take ownership of the problem with e-waste.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says if people care about their lives and their families as well as their surrounding environment, they need to take a more active role in recycling old electronics. \u003cbr/\u003eSpringfield Public Works Department's Materials Recovery Education Coordinator, Barbara Lucks, says by the time the unwanted materials are found at landfills it is too late to recycle.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says the effort needs to be made at a much earlier stage. \u003cbr/\u003eAll over the United States small private firms are venturing into the computer recycling business to meet this growing need.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the outskirts of Springfield, Missouri  an e-waste recycling centre charges a fee of between five and twenty five dollars for equipment to be recycled - everything from computer mice to televisions and their remote controls.\u003cbr/\u003eCompany owner Ken Reise takes care of home-users as well as businesses looking to reduce their e-waste.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says his best customers are local medical practitioners, banks and insurance companies. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to recycling their old equipment, these companies know that anything stored on the old computers is destroyed - reducing the chance of anyone else getting access to their company information.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Sierra Club, as well as the US Federal Government, is concerned about toxic materials being dumped in landfills and potentially leaching into groundwater.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Director of the Office of Solid Waste at the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Matthew Hale, says there is also an important business component to recycling.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Europe, some countries require manufacturers to be responsible for the final resting place for their equipment - and that is a plan the Sierra Club would like to see introduced in to the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eLeFever says the Sierra Club expects once that has happened, manufacturers would start specifically designing equipment with recycling requirements in mind.\u003cbr/\u003eHale says he thinks better design is the key to reducing toxins in the future.\u003cbr/\u003eFour US states already control the dumping of e-waste.\u003cbr/\u003e20 other states and New York City are considering introducing similar legislation.\u003cbr/\u003eClients are
