years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vaccine, known as AIDSVAX is being developed by the American company VaxGen.\u003cbr/\u003eRepresentatives from VaxGen were among the delegates attending the 14th International AIDS Conference in Barcelona.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 15-thousand people from around the world are in Spain's Catalan capital Barcelona attending a week-long conference aimed at finding solutions to the AIDS epidemic that now infects 40 (m) million worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003eVaxGen believes its vaccine may provide new hope for AIDs sufferers around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company's co-founder, Tom Francis, says the vaccine is now in the final phase of development, after 17 years of work.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Joint United Nations Aids Programme on HIV/Aids (UNAids) said that even if the vaccine was only partially effective it would play a major role in the fight against the disease worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003eBut until the results of clinical trials of the vaccine in the United States were analysed, it would be premature to claim it would be effective, it said.\u003cbr/\u003eJose Esparza, co-ordinator of the Geneva-based UNAids HIV vaccine initiative, has praised VaxGen's commitment, but says if the vaccine does prove effective the difficulties of cost and availability will have to be addressed.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, an AIDS drug that prevents the virus from entering cells is helping thousands of patients resistant to current therapies.\u003cbr/\u003ePhase 3 results for T-20, produced by Roche Holding of Switzerland, presented for the first time, show that levels of HIV in the blood are significantly reduced when the ground-breaking investigational HIV drug, T-20 is used with optimised background therapy (individually chosen anti-HIV drug combination selected from those currently available).  \u003cbr/\u003eThe body's immune response is also significantly improved in these treated patients.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike existing AIDS drugs which work once the HIV virus has entered the human cell, T-20 works in a completely new way in that it blocks HIV from entering CD4 cells of the immune system. \u003cbr/\u003eDr David Reddy, Head of Aids research for Roche, says manufacturing vaccines have always proved very challenging for HIV, and in the meantime drugs like T-20 can offer hope for people living with HIV.\u003cbr/\u003eHIV patient, James Locke, has been using T-20 for a year.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says it has changed his life, and given him hope, even allowing him to become a yoga teacher.\u003cbr/\u003eBut dozens of AIDS activists staged a demonstration at the conference.\u003cbr/\u003eDemonstrators crashed Roche's exhibition stand at the conference, calling for the company to provide cheaper medication, particularly to those HIV-infected in developing countries.\u003cbr/\u003eMany from the Paris-based group Act Up, argue drugs like T-20 are not affordable or widely available.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're demanding \"AIDS  treatment now\" for the world's HIV-infected, ninety-eight percent of whom do not receive life-saving treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eWhilst the money going into AIDS activities has increased six fold since 1998 in developed countries, developing countries are tailing way behind.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 2.8 billion US dollars will be spent for AIDS activities in low- and middle-income countries
