Various of photograph showing wife of US president Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, with flamenco performers \u003cbr/\u003eThe spiritual home of flamenco is the Spanish city of Granada.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the shadow of the ancient Alhambra Palace, locals are fighting to maintain the historic gypsy spirit of the area, under threat from the pressures of tourism and developers.\u003cbr/\u003eFlamenco!\u003cbr/\u003eThe seductively rhythmic music, dance and song of this gypsy tradition has it's home in the streets, alleyways and bars of Granada.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Spanish region of Andalucia is famed for flamenco, but Granada is it's beating heart.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spectacular historic highlight of the city is the Moorish Alhambra fortress that still stands above the modern town at the top of the valley.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the other side, clinging to the hillside, are the Albaycin and Sacromonte neighbourhoods, the home of flamenco.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth these quarters as well as the Alhambra have been listed as World Heritage sites by UNESCO.\u003cbr/\u003eEver since, the area has undergone constant improvement and restoration. But the locals are determined to preserve the original wild spirit of their gypsy music and dance.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the 19th century Sacromonte already had a significant gypsy community, who built their homes in caves carved from the soft limestone of the hillsides.\u003cbr/\u003eThe area is home to an estimated 500 people. To them, flamenco is a way of life.\u003cbr/\u003eThe music of the gypsies, that can be simultaneously mournful and full of passionate rage, love and tenderness.\u003cbr/\u003eSalvadora Maya is one of the city's most famous flamenco artists and owner of the legendary flamenco venue \"Cueva de la Rocio\".\u003cbr/\u003eShe proudly declares herself a flamenco gypsy, and says many of her community have flamenco in their soul.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite recent changes, she doesn't think the spirit of the old community is in too much danger:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't think the neighbourhood is disappearing. The Sacromonte remains as it once was. In the old days it was different because there were a lot more residents. Nowadays we have fewer neighbours, but when it comes to gathering and dancing flamenco in any place and at any time, things are still the same.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOn top of the hillside stands a museum built in some of the caves which were abandoned after floods swept through the city some fifty years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe limestone allows the temperature inside the cave remain constant throughout the year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe curator of the Cave Museum explains that ever since Sacromonte turned into a tourist attraction they have had to fight against property developers:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The pressure that Sacromonte faces, owing to its beauty, is a 'Sword of Damocles' that has been threatening this neighbourhood for a long time. There was a project to tear this down this very museum and develop modern housing overlooking the Alhambra.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNowadays many cave houses have been restored and turned into comfortable modern homes.\u003cbr/\u003eJose Torres Hurtado is the Mayor of Granada.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that maintaining both Sacromonte and Albaycin is a priority but it's an ongoing task:\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a neighbourhood that consists of narrow alleys that were arranged that way in the old times to avoid the excessive heat. As a consequence we are forced to work around the clock to keep it in good condition.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt \"Cueva de la Rocio\" the show is supervised by Juan Andres Maya, son of Salvadora Maya and one of Spain's most eminent flamenco dancers and choreographers.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the reputation of the venue has been boosted after a recent visit by the First Lady of the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mayas have labelled the very chair where Michelle Obama sat while attending the show.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is clear that when you receive the First Lady of the United States or (former US President) Bill Clinton, such famous people, then people come here asking for these specific venues. We've always had a good clientele. But people like the ones I mentioned, have enriched our reputation and that is good for the neighbourhood.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFormer US President Bill Clinton also declared the sunset over the Alhambra
