Wide of cattle grazing\u003cbr/\u003eZimbabwe's farmers are cashing in on their cows, without having to sell.\u003cbr/\u003eThe nation's first \"Cattle Bank\" is allowing communal farmers to use their cows as cash deposits to open accounts, earn interest and borrow money against their value.     \u003cbr/\u003eZimbabwean villager Jeremiah Ngandu is making a deposit in the bank: it has four legs, bellows and makes deposits of its own in the pasture.\u003cbr/\u003eThe nation's first \"Cattle Bank\" has just opened its books in a unique kind of banking where owners are being asked to bring in their animals as a cash deposit enabling them to withdraw and borrow money against their value while retaining ownership.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore each deposit the cattle are evaluated and valued by a veterinary official. Their values range from as little as 50 US dollars to 800 US dollars depending on their age, weight, health and breed.\u003cbr/\u003eJeremiah Ngandu, a farmer in Domboshava communal lands, says he had decided to try out the programme and would decide whether to invest more of his cattle after an initial try with just two.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have decided to try this out by sending two of my cows. If it works out I will send more\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe independent TN Bank, named after its founder Tawanda Nyambirai, says the livestock transactions are managed like those of any commercial, urban bank.  Put in the cows, and then many rural poor can have chance of opening a bank account for the first time in their lives, the bank says.\u003cbr/\u003eBank executive Charles Chakoma explains:  \u003cbr/\u003e\"If you look at it in Zimbabwe we have something like 5 million cattle and 4 million of those are owned by the communal people. So we are giving them a chance to get onto the financial system and to be able to have financial inclusion.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor the first two years the cattle remain with the bank and accrue a 10 percent yearly interest. \u003cbr/\u003eFor instance, if a farmer deposits 24 cattle valued at some 10-thousand US dollars, the farmer will be getting 1-thousand US dollars interest a year which the bank can give them as money or cows valued at that amount.\u003cbr/\u003eA healthy return in a country where the yearly GDP per capita is 757 US dollars, according to World Bank figures.\u003cbr/\u003eOwners have the option to get back their cattle after an initial two years or leave them with the bank for longer. Interest can be paid in cash or cows.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bank picks up the costs of transporting the cattle from outlying areas to paddocks it has setup across the country where fattening programs and cross-breeding have been  introduced. Owners are issued with the bank's 'Certificate of Cattle Deposit' as proof of a transaction.\u003cbr/\u003eIn traditional rural life, cattle symbolise wealth and are used as draught power during the planting season and as payment for bride price in marriages. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have significance in various cultural rituals of sacrifice at funerals and the appeasement of ancestral spirits.\u003cbr/\u003eZimbabwe has an estimated 4 (m) million village cattle not reared on commercial ranches that are valued at over 1 (b) billion US dollar and comprise about 80 percent of the national herd, says Chakoma.\u003cbr/\u003eMany cattle owners may be reluctant to give up their prized possessions given the status symbol  they represent in  society, but Chakoma says cattle banking eases the burden of tending to and herding cattle, especially on elderly owners left on their own due to the massive migration of younger rural people from villages into the cities.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The obvious benefit is that by giving us their cattle they have taken away the need to herd the cattle themselves. In some areas the amount of grazing is getting lower and lower and the animals you can see they are suffering,\" he points out. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring the dry season from June to October there is less grass for the cattle to feed on and rural cattle wander for \"free range grazing\" and often get lost or stolen. Others die during near-freezing temperatures in Zimbabwe's winter season.\u003cbr/\u003eThe harsh farming conditions, made farmer Ngandu ponder his options: \u003cbr/\u003e\"Right now, considering the state that our grazing lands are in, its better to give the cattle to TN Livestock Trust. There is nothing for the cattle to feed on.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the bank has accepted the cattle, it is responsible for any losses.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We look after them properly, world standard cattle management system. They have to be more productive than what they are when they are with the farmer,\" Chakoma explains. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the event the cow dies, the farmer is reimbursed the full value of the animal. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Cattle Bank insists they want to reassure its depositors and Zimbabweans at large who have lost faith in the nation's formal banking system after years of world record inflation and
