The British...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eNobody knows how many Romanians and Bulgarians will migrate to Britain after January 1 2014, when work restrictions will be lifted across the European Union (EU) for migrants from two of the trading bloc's newest members. \u003cbr/\u003eThe British government has refused to provide an official estimate. \u003cbr/\u003eBut many Britons believe that the migrants will choose Britain over other EU members because it is seen to be a generous welfare state.\u003cbr/\u003eOutside the Romanian capital, Bucharest, one Roma family contemplating such a move spoke to The Associated Press recently.\u003cbr/\u003eThey explained why they would like to start a new life in Britain once labour restrictions are lifted. \u003cbr/\u003eMladin and Marioara Tranca, who are in their 40s, live with one of their three children and three grandchildren.\u003cbr/\u003eBut only Mladin is employed, working as a mechanic in a workshop a few miles (kilometres) from his home.\u003cbr/\u003eCompared to many Roma who are among the poorest sectors of society in Romania and suffer widespread discrimination, the Trancas are well-off and well-educated. \u003cbr/\u003eBut with salaries low in Romania and social welfare not enough to cover everyday costs, the family, who used to live in Germany, say they're considering emigrating to Britain.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I want to go to England to improve my day-to-day standard of living. I'd also like a better education for my children, like all parents want for their children. And something better for my family,\" Mladin says.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the couple, who have been married for 30 years, say they have no illusions that daily life will be much easier. \u003cbr/\u003eBut they say opportunities a British education will afford their children are worth it.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If I go to England, I will have to struggle a bit, there's no doubt about that - both me and my child will have to. But I will cut back on what I need so that my child can go to school there. If he does that he will have a job, if he graduates from high school or university. Life is different there, it is easier, it is easier to make money. I mean, you work less there than here, but the rewards are greater in England,\" Marioara told The Associated Press.\u003cbr/\u003eRomania and Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007 and more than 100-thousand migrants from the two countries already work in Britain, albeit under work restrictions that limit their access to jobs and state benefits like healthcare.\u003cbr/\u003eThe work restrictions use quotas to limit the number of low-skilled Romanians and Bulgarians who can take jobs in Britain and requires them to obtain a \"worker authorisation document\" before taking a position. \u003cbr/\u003eThose who work without proper papers, and employers who hire them, face fines and prosecution.\u003cbr/\u003eThose restrictions - similar to those in place in several other EU countries - will be lifted on 1 January, giving Romanians and Bulgarians the same rights as other EU nationals to live and seek work freely across Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eBritain is bound by EU regulations to let the migrants work, and is powerless to extend the restrictions. \u003cbr/\u003eFor months, Britain's tabloid newspapers have repeatedly warned the easing of work restrictions will unleash a mass exodus of the poor and unemployed from the two eastern European countries to Britain.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite this human resources organisations in both countries say they do not expect a massive influx after the end of 2013. \u003cbr/\u003eA research shows that both Romania and Bulgaria have aging and shrinking populations and the lowest fertility rates in Europe. Thus the cohort of young people, who are most likely to migrate is shrinking. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, labour and skills shortages are reported from Bulgaria and in both countries some immigration as well as return migration has been observed.\u003cbr/\u003eRadislav Nakov, Chairman of the Association of Medical Students in Bulgaria, says that although the move might encourage newly qualified doctors to specialise in the UK, those who want to work in the UK are already doing so.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I can't say that more Bulgarian medics will leave for the UK - perhaps there will be no major change in the number of Bulgarian medical specialists who will travel to the UK - and a change in the influx of nurses, because both are highly qualified personnel who could even now easily work there, as long as they have registered with the UK's Medical Association, the GMC (General Medical Council) and are fluent in the English language.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"My opinion is that, yes, there will be an increase in interest (in migrating to the UK) after 1 January , but will it not be a boom, because this interest already exists today,\" says Ventsislav Duev, manager of the Human Resources (HR) company \"Slava7\".\u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the anxiety about an influx in migration can be blamed on the British experience in 2004, when Poland and other former communist countries joined the EU. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials had mistakenly estimated that several thousand would come, but more than 1 (m) million Poles moved to Britain.\u003cbr/\u003eArguments that the influx of Polish workers has helped Britain's economy have not calmed worries of a second wave of eastern migration, especially now that the British economy is much weaker than it was a decade ago.   \u003cbr/\u003eBucharest, Romania - 12 December 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
