Everybody is informed, everybody got the invitation, everybody knows that from 8 till 10 p.m. we are voting in the referendum,'' said Svetlana Kalisetskaya, chairwoman of the polling committee in Perevalnye.\u003cbr/\u003eA few metres (yards) away from the polling station, one of the biggest Ukrainian military bases was surrounded by Russian troops.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the approach to the base's main gates, a regiment of heavily armed, masked soldiers stood guard in the trees and on the side of the road about every 30 metres (100 feet).\u003cbr/\u003eThe base's gates were locked with a chain and a padlock and Ukrainian soldiers could be seen locked out of the base, standing outside the gate.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the eve of Sunday's referendum on whether the Black Sea peninsula should break away from Ukraine and join Russia, Ukraine's military forces face uncertainty.\u003cbr/\u003eHeavily armed Russian troops, which have occupied the peninsula for over two weeks now, have warned Ukrainian army that they would be considered illegal if they didn't surrender.\u003cbr/\u003eUkrainian officials have said more than 20-thousand Russian troops were in Crimea. \u003cbr/\u003eMany are believed to be under the command of the Black Sea Fleet, which is based in Sevastopol under a lease deal with Ukraine.\u003cbr/\u003eRussia effectively took control of Crimea, where it has a large naval base after Moscow-friendly President Viktor Yanukovych fled the country in the wake of months of anti-government protests. \u003cbr/\u003e1.
