Wide shot farm worker exiting the stable
Cloned cows, genetically modified by Chinese scientists, are producing milk with more of the enzymes found in human breast milk.
Despite the heated debate over ethical issues, the scientists and the company backing them, claim to be three years away from introducing 'humanised' diary products to the market place.
Nothing looks different at first sight.
It's just plain, white, fresh milk, produced by these healthy and well-cared cows and milked twice a day at this farm in Beijing.
But the sign at the entrance informs the few visitors allowed that these are not just your average Holstein dairy cows. They have been labelled the 'core group' of a biotech experiment that aims to create a bold new consumer food product.
By combining cloning techniques and introducing genetic modifications, scientists from China Agricultural University have engineered cows to produce proteins that are closer to, but still not identical to, the concentrations found in human milk.
The experiment has been conducted before, but experts here plan to massively produce the milk for the consumer market arguing it is more suitable for human consumption than traditional diary products.
Li Ning is the head of the research. The director of the State Key Laboratories for Agro Biotechnology explains that proteins contained in human milk offer nutrients that can improve overall health and provide immunological protection for both infants and adults.
Most significantly, this cow's milk has more than normal amounts of lysozyme, the enzyme found in breast milk that distributes bacteria in the digestive track and protects infants from infections at early stages of life.
The scientists say they have been able to get cows to produce milk containing about half the components identified in human milk, though not in the same concentrations. Their results have been published and reviewed in the scientific journal Public Library of Science One.
The World Health Organization (WHO) encourages breastfeeding as the safest, healthiest and most natural way of "providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development".
Nevertheless, China has extremely low rates of breastfeeding, says Peter Ben Embarek, a food safety and nutrition expert at the WHO office in Beijing.
Many mothers believe their milk won't be enough for their children because of the promotion and distribution of infant formula in hospitals, according to Ben Embarek.
Several labs around the world have been working on similar transgenic techniques to get animals to produce human-like milk.
Li and his team have been working on the project for about a decade, and are eyeing market opportunities for their product.
China could prove a promising, or perilous, market since the local diary industry has been hit by a series of safety scandals involving tainted milk and infant formula that killed six babies and sickened hundreds of thousands. If proven safe, their product could take off. But there could also be public concern about high tech tampering with dairy products.
They have spent around 30 million yuan (USD 4.6 million) from government grants and private investment.
Using techniques established by other scientists, the lab isolated several key protein genes in human breast milk, extracted them and introduced them to cows' cells.
The transgenic cells were placed into embryos developed through cloning techniques. Finally, they placed the embryos in the wombs of surrogate cows.
Some of the surviving offspring produced human-like transgenic milk when they reached maturity. But as often happens with cloning, not all of them grew healthy at the beginning.
The success rate was around 50% according to scientists, meaning that half of the cows were born with deadly defects.
Most of the first-generation calves died within the first month.
The success rate has improved with successive generations, and 600 head of cloned cattle are now kept here.
As for the milk, only a handful of researchers have tasted it so far, but according to Zhang Lei, one of the lead scientists, it tastes similar to traditional dairy products.
Yoghurt made from the transgenic milk at the farm is described by Zhang as "sweet and fragrant." He says it's less watery than normal cow's milk yoghurt.
Although China so far has been conservative in the approval of GM products for human consumption, scientists expect to obtain permission in the next three years to launch a full range of 'humanised milk' products.
They plan to start isolating proteins, such as lysozyme, and selling them like dietary supplements, both individually and as an additive to enrich the infant formulas already in the market.
Lysozymes extracted in this way are already used in medicines produced in the United States and Europe, though transgenic food products have yet to be approved for commercial sale anywhere in the world.
If everything goes well, the main investor in the project, Beijing GenProtein Biotechnology Company, wants to mass produce everything from pure milk to medicines and vitamins, as well as cosmetics and even toothpaste.
Professor Li has even bigger plans for the long term.
Since thousands of years of domestication have already modified greatly the genetic structure of cattle, Li sees no reason why the transgenic cows created by his research should not replace the conventional ones over the following century.
Not everybody is so hopeful. At Greenpeace China, a team of campaigners works to ensure that no GM products without the official stamp enter the market. The organisation adheres to the precautionary principle of waiting until science is able to prove the product safety and the lack of damage to the environment.
Currently, engineered cotton or papayas are among the few GM products officially approved for commercial sale in China, but Fang Lifeng says unapproved GM rice seeds have already made their way into the food chain.
He worries about plans to introduce a new type of milk, arguing that the scientific community has not concluded yet on the safety of transgenic products. In addition, says Fang, consuming transgenic milk could be more dangerous in the case of children, the most sensitive group to nutritional variations.
The WHO says that beyond safety concerns, there are ethnical and socio-political concerns to consider when it comes to making food with the use of cloning techniques.
Ben Embarek says only radical human health benefits would be likely to justify the use of the technique. Otherwise, it will be difficult to persuade the public of the need to switch from conventional ways and products.

<div class='action-container
