Helicopter departs
The shrinking of glaciers has been recorded across many parts of the world, which is causing widespread alarm.
It is feared the knock on effect of glacial retreat will have a devastating impact on vast numbers of people across the globe.
Recording the changes in glaciers is essential for scientists as they determine the effects, and rate, of climate change.
The recession of the world's glaciers is considered a strong indicator of climate change and glaciologists in France have been watching in alarm as their glaciers recede.
Glaciologist Christian Vincent, from Laboratoire de Glaciologie et Geophysique de l'Environment in Grenoble is observing five French glaciers.
With his team, he heads out several times a year to record how much snow has melted over the summer and how much has fallen over the winter.
Each spring he records the winter snow fall at the Glacier du Talefre and Glacier de Lechaud which flow into the Mer de Glace - the largest glacier in France.
The Mer de Glace is located on the northern slopes of the Mont Blanc - in the French Alps. It is 7 kilometres (4 miles) long and 200 metres (656 feet) deep.
Vincent explains that samples are obtained by boring into the snow on different parts of the glaciers.
He says that these samples are taken in the same locations during different expeditions to ensure that comparisons over the years are as accurate as possible.
These observations have been made for the past 50 years, building up a clear picture of the evolution of climate over time.
A core sample is obtained by boring into the snow - various measurements are then recorded so the scientists can later determine the glaciers' mass balance.
Vincent says that the scientific community is interested in their observations as it is a good indication of climate change.
Climate change is blamed for causing variations in both temperature and snow fall and this in turn is believed to have an impact on the mass balance.
Vincent says that glaciers fascinate the public not only for their stunning natural beauty but also because they often serve as a stark reminder of the effects of global warming as their shrinking can be seen with the naked eye.
The Mer de Glace was once visible from the ski resort of Chamonix, but nowadays can barely be glimpsed from below.
In March 2008 the United Nations Environment Programme published a study which found that glaciers are shrinking at record rates and many could disappear within decades.
Scientists measuring the health of almost 30 glaciers around the world found that ice loss reached record levels in 2006, the U.N. agency said.
On average, the glaciers shrank by 4.9 feet in 2006, the most recent year for which data are available.
The most severe loss was recorded at Norway's Breidalblikkbrea glacier, which shrank 10.2 feet in 2006, while Chile's Echaurren Norte glacier was the only one to grow slightly thicker.
The study was based on the findings of the World Glacier Monitoring Service, a Zurich-based body.
The study found that glaciers lost an average of about a foot of ice a year between 1980 and 1999.
But since the turn of the millennium the average loss has increased to about 20 inches.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
