This particular piece is a very rare example, only because its primary purpose is as a snuff box. So here we have the compartment for the snuff. But also the materials made of it, the main gold chassis work, and then you've got the spilt pearl decorations on the top, followed closely by panels of cobalt blue enamel, red, blue, white, green, and then a hand painted lid scene of a young boy reading with three attentive ladies. The singing bird is activated at the touch of a button on a fuse movement. Moving its tail feather, wings and body. Steiff first produced their first Teddy bear in around 1902. This one would date to around 1908-1909. Lovely cinnamon colour and in lovely original condition with a paw pads. He's also a slight rarity because he's what we call a centre seam, it has a seam going up the centre of his head. Of which this is put down to one in seven bears have this. It's when they came to the end of the mohair cloth, they has half left. So instead of throwing it away, they had to halves to make the bear up. Lovely bear. recalls some of the gifts of Christmases past.  \u003cbr/\u003eA unique collection of rare antique toys is going under the hammer at Bonhams auction house in London on November 20-21, 2007. \u003cbr/\u003eThe items on sale include Victorian rocking houses to a wide variety of mechanical toys, dolls, teddy bears, trains and model soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the collectors are hoping to catch a glimpse, or even bid, for some of the rarer toys on sale.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the antique dolls on sale are part of the Barbara Ronchetti collection.\u003cbr/\u003eRonchetti begun her comprehensive collection in the 1970s, after buying a small doll from a charity shop.\u003cbr/\u003eNow some these treasured dolls are expected to fetch over �1,000 (around $2,000 US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eAlso expected to attract much attention from collectors are some of the rare musical boxes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe star of this range is the singing bird box made by Jaquet Droz, in 1795.\u003cbr/\u003eCarefully holding the delicate box is Lawrence Fisher, Bonhams' specialist on mechanical music.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the box, originally used to hold snuff, is very rare because it is made from gold and pearl.\u003cbr/\u003eSnuff is a type of smokeless tobacco, that is sniffed from the nose.\u003cbr/\u003eThis gold enamel box is the most expensive item on sale and is expected to sell between �50,000 and �70,000 UK pounds (between $100,000 and $140,000 US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003ePerhaps the most striking feature of the box is the tiny wind up singing bird, which pops out at the flick of a switch.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother rare item in the mechanical range is a 19th century singing bird in a cage.\u003cbr/\u003eFisher says the bird is a real stuffed creature which is operated by single spring motor.\u003cbr/\u003eThis unusual item is expected to sell between �1,800 and �2,000 UK pounds (around $3,600 to $4,000 US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eBonhams believes the bird-in-a-cage was made in France by Phalibois, around 1880 and 1890.\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere on show is a biscuit tin shaped like a 1920s racing car. \u003cbr/\u003eLeigh Gotch, head of the toy department at Bonhams, says the racing car comes with its original biscuits and inscribed box.\u003cbr/\u003eWritten on the box is a birthday message that reads \"To Ted, wishing you many happy returns of the day\", signed by Lady Eleanor.\u003cbr/\u003eGotch says the box is in exceptional condition and should sell at between �2,000 to �3,000 UK pounds (around $4,000 to $6,000 US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eRegardless of its condition, eating the biscuits is not advised.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso on sale is an original 1920s Distler Mickey Mouse Organ Grinder.\u003cbr/\u003eThe small mechanical toy is expected to fetch in the region of �8,000 to �12,000 UK pounds (around $16,000 to $24,000 US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eDespite its age and some rust, the organ is still able to play a tune.\u003cbr/\u003eGotch says that collecting all sorts of toys has been in fashion for the past twenty years.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the largest single collections on sale is the Robert 'John' Hockey toy train collection.\u003cbr/\u003eThe comprehensive collection features almost over 300 items, ranging from locomotives, steam trains, to model railway buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother item expected to attract plenty of attention is a Steiff teddy bear, from 1909.\u003cbr/\u003eGotch says the bear is being sold with an original black and white photograph of its first owner.\u003cbr/\u003eThe faded photo shows three children holding the bear. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition, the bear is what experts call a 'centre-seam', meaning it has a seam across its face.\u003cbr/\u003eThe name comes from when it was manufactured using two separate mohair cloths.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly one in seven Steiff teddy bears is a 'centre-seam'.\u003cbr/\u003eGotch says the bear is expected to achieve around �4,000 to �6,000 UK pounds (between $8,000 to $12,000 US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the larger items on sale is the Drunkard's Dream mechanical box, made by Bollands of London.\u003cbr/\u003eSpringing into life once a coin is inserted, it reveals a 'Cellar Scene' with an inebriated man sitting amongst empty bottles of beer.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the background of this amusing scene, are a moving mouse and a snake emerging from a box.\u003cbr/\u003eThe working model is being priced between �4,000 to �6,000 UK pounds (around $8,000 to $12,000 US Dollars).\u003cbr/\u003eThe organisers of the auction
