for its sluggish response.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at a press conference in Beijing, Zhang Wenkang repeated a message made public on Wednesday that the spread of atypical pneumonia across parts of China had been brought under control.\u003cbr/\u003eThe minister also defended China's seemingly slow response to the first signs of the disease, known as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), in Guangdong Province last November. \u003cbr/\u003eBeijing finally gave a team of World Health Organization (WHO) officials its permission to visit Guangdong on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eZhang said China was now working closely with the WHO and would provide daily updates on fresh cases of the illness and its fatalities on a daily basis.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Geneva-based WHO has advised travellers not to go to Hong Kong and Guangdong - hot spots where the disease has spread rapidly infecting hundreds and killing about four percent of those afflicted.  \u003cbr/\u003eTaiwan has criticised its mainland rival for responding slowly to the outbreak of the disease and of withholding information - charges which Beijing denies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe island territory has recorded 13 cases of SARS, but requests
