Various of Wall Street Journal printing press\u003cbr/\u003eShareholders of Dow Jones \u0026amp; Co. gave final approval Thursday to a five (b) billion dollar bid from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. to acquire the financial publishing company, the final step needed before one of the world's most influential newspapers, The Wall Street Journal, changes hands.\u003cbr/\u003eThe controlling shareholders of Dow Jones, the far-flung Bancroft family, had initially rebuffed Murdoch's approach this spring, but eventually enough of them agreed to accept his offer of 60 dollars a share to ensure the bid would succeed.\u003cbr/\u003eDow Jones held the shareholder vote in a hotel in the financial district of lower Manhattan, near its headquarters. The formal closing of the deal is expected to occur later on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eTuna Amobi, Senior Media and Entertainment Analyst at Standard \u0026amp; Poor's, said the agreement reached today was a long-time coming and represented \"little more than a formality.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bancroft family was long seen as unified in opposition to selling, but Murdoch was able to win over enough family members to assure that his bid would be approved in a shareholder vote.\u003cbr/\u003eCompany officials announced at the meeting that the deal was approved by 60.3 percent of Dow Jones' voting power.\u003cbr/\u003eMurdoch won his campaign to acquire Dow Jones in early August after months of wrangling with the Bancroft family, who had controlled the storied publishing company for more than a century. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Bancrofts' roughly three dozen adult members are descended from the family of an early owner of Dow Jones, Clarence Barron.\u003cbr/\u003eThe final stage of the deal, however, was a bittersweet moment for many at Dow Jones.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral family members, as well as former board member Jim Ottaway Jr. and a union that represents Journal reporters, voiced concerns that the paper's quality and independence would suffer under Murdoch.\u003cbr/\u003eMurdoch, who owns a large portfolio of newspapers in Australia, the United Kingdom and the New York Post, said those concerns were unfounded, but he also agreed to set up an editorial oversight board to allay those worries.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The new board that supposedly is independent with members and representatives from various parties, I think Rupert is trying to do something similar to what he did in the Times of London, but this is a little bit further reaching.
