Mid of Carlos preparing his tent and a cat jumping out \u003cbr/\u003eDescribing themselves as a lost paradise in a huge city ''Velatropa'' is a hidden urban community that sits right in the centre of the Argentine capital.\u003cbr/\u003eVeiled among the trees on the grounds of the University of Buenos Aires the eco-village is an experiment in social interaction and sustainable living.\u003cbr/\u003eHavens of tranquillity and higher consciousness are not generally surrounded by high rise building blocks.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Velatropa is not your regular old hippie getaway. \u003cbr/\u003eA mixture of bohemian commune and futuristic urban society, it''s hidden in the bowels of the campus of the University of Buenos Aires.\u003cbr/\u003eYes, there are signs of sixties and seventies hippie counter culture in the art and the unstructured  mud buildings. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Velatropa is a structured society, based on the Maya civilisation, and permaculture.\u003cbr/\u003eThe residents here are focused on sharing, changing the way people interact and getting reconnected with the earth.\u003cbr/\u003eRosario Palma was one of the community''s founding members. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says it''s not necessary to retreat to the woods or the mountains to build a stronger bond with the environment and each other. \u003cbr/\u003eVelatropa began to rise two years ago on the foundations of what would be block five of the university campus. \u003cbr/\u003eThe space, abandoned for decades, has gestated into a hive of at times up to a 100 residents that live in tents or buildings designed from completely recycled material.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile it is a place that remains outside ''the system'' its existence is becoming more and more a badly kept secret.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this failure is also the community''s success. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the weekends their commune is increasingly filled with visitors who come to learn about their alternative existence.\u003cbr/\u003eFood self-reliance is only one objective, the eco-villagers are also focused on redefining the fabric of society.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile offering a retreat from the concrete surroundings of one of Latin America''s most populated cities, visitors are invited to plant a tree and are reminded of what it means to relate to neighbours.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile not all who visit may be prepared to enter into the full spirit of the community, walking barefoot among the vegetable plots, Dorothea, the self appointed tour guide, says everyone takes something away with them.\u003cbr/\u003eBy combining ecological food growing programmes with self-designed technology such as solar panels, the diverse community is almost totally autonomous.\u003cbr/\u003eWith one tap for running water from the university they pay their way by selling homemade breads and pies to visitors and to people on campus. \u003cbr/\u003eMoney is divided among the members and speakers are often brought in to give talks on everything from ancient cultures to art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe members follow the Mayan calendar, which indicates natural cycles ,and in a collective way ensures every member contributes to the overall well being of the community.\u003cbr/\u003eThey do not have any one leader or head figure but are totally committed to sharing every decision.\u003cbr/\u003eSociologist, Jorge Carrizo,from the University of Buenos Aires, says while a lot of people may see their existence as a form of escapism, it is in fact very constructive for our increasingly disconnected world. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir interaction with the university does not stop at the campus doors. \u003cbr/\u003eVelatropa is seen as a social experiment and all members, some of whom are already full time students, are invited to participate in a variety of college courses.\u003cbr/\u003eA lot of the \"velatropenses\", as they are known, are regular participants in the curriculum of the architectural and experimental production department.\u003cbr/\u003eDante Munoz, head lecturer, says the members of the eco-village provide a living laboratory for the class''s designs, which is of great mutual benefit.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most pressing projects of the community in conjunction with the University is to design a programme to recycle all the campus''s thrash.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the ambition of the group grows, its distance from the stereotype of a hippie commune also becomes more palpable.\u003cbr/\u003eCarlos Oyuela, who is trained as a systems engineer, has been living in Velatropa for just over a year now. \u003cbr/\u003eOriginally from Colombia, he says it changed his life. He no longer hears the noise from the nearby highway, he just hears the birds and feels part of this community.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says being in touch with the earth makes it a beautiful place to be.\u003cbr/\u003eCarlos''s story is similar to many here. \u003cbr/\u003eThe alternative residents come from all over Latin America and Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eThey hope that their Garden of Eden will
