Lebanese armoured personnel carriers driving away\u003cbr/\u003eOn October 19th angry protesters stormed the streets of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, after a car bomb exploded earlier in the day, killing a top Lebanese security officer and seven others, and leaving dozens wounded.\u003cbr/\u003eProtesters set fire to tyres and blocked roads near the city centre, demanding that those behind the attack be brought to justice.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack, which the state-run news agency said targeted the convoy of Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan, the head of the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces, was the most serious blast the Lebanese capital has seen in four years.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Lebanese quickly raised the possibility the violence was connected to the civil war in neighbouring Syria, which has sent destabilizing ripples through Lebanon for the past 19 months. \u003cbr/\u003eAl-Hassan led an investigation over the summer that implicated a pro-Syrian Lebanese politician and one of the highest aides to Syrian President Bashar Assad in plots to carry out bombings in Lebanon.\u003cbr/\u003eOn October 20th hundreds of armed men took to the streets of Tripoli, protesting against the assassination of security chief Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan.\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere in the city, one sheikh was killed when gunmen exchanged fire in the Abi Samra neighbourhood. \u003cbr/\u003eProtesters continue to burn tires and set up roadblocks around Lebanon, as anger grows over a massive car bomb in Beirut that killed al-Hassan and seven other people a day earlier, a devastating attack that threatened to bring Syria's civil war to Lebanon. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We want the state to tell us who is doing all these killings,\" said one militant, who did not give his name, in the midst of an armed convoy touring Tripoli. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have lost 20 deputies so far. Why do they refuse to tell us who is doing all of this? Do they want us to take to the streets for good? Be it the Syrian regime, or Hezbollah, they should all be ripped away.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePrime Minister Najib Mikati gave a televised statement on October 20th which linked October 19th's massive car bomb to the civil war in neighbouring Syria, the latest signal that the crisis is inflaming an already tense region.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lebanese Cabinet held an emergency meeting October 20th as the country's opposition called for Mikati to resign. \u003cbr/\u003eDozens were wounded in October 19th's blast in Beirut's mainly Christian Achrafieh neighbourhood.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government has declared a national day of mourning for the victims. \u003cbr/\u003eMany observers said the attack appeared to have links to the Syrian civil war, which has been raging for 19 months. \u003cbr/\u003eAl-Hassan, 47, headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's most loyal allies in Lebanon.\u003cbr/\u003eAl-Hassan's department also had a role in breaking up several Israeli spy rings inside Lebanon over the past few years, Lebanese officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe civil war in Syria has laid bare Lebanon's sectarian tensions as well.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims have tended to back Assad. \u003cbr/\u003eAl-Hassan was a Sunni whose stances were widely seen to oppose Syria and Shiite Hezbollah, the country's most powerful ally in Lebanon.\u003cbr/\u003eOn December 6th Lebanese army tanks patrolled Syrian neighbourhoods of Tripoli as sectarian tensions continued to run high between Syrian government supporters, and those opposed to the Assad regime.\u003cbr/\u003eSoldiers could be seen returning fire as fighters apparently ignored a 6 a.m. local time (04:00 GMT) deadline to withdraw from the streets.\u003cbr/\u003eHeavy battles were also fought overnight in the largely Sunni neighbourhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh, which supports Syria's predominantly Sunni rebels, and the adjacent Alawite neighbourhood of Jabal Mohsen, which supports Syrian President Bashar Assad. \u003cbr/\u003eGunmen loyal to opposite sides in neighbouring Syria's civil war have been fighting since Tuesday and Lebanese security officials said at least six people have been killed and more than 50 wounded in the fighting so far.\u003cbr/\u003eLebanon, a country plagued by decades of strife, has been on edge since the uprising in Syria began, and deadly clashes between pro- and anti-Assad Lebanese groups have erupted more than a dozen times.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Syria conflict has also spilled over into Turkey, Israel and Jordan over the past 20 months, but Lebanon is particularly vulnerable to getting sucked into the conflict. \u003cbr/\u003eThe countries share a complex web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries that are easily enflamed. \u003cbr/\u003eTensions in Tripoli have been mounting for a week, when reports emerged that at least a dozen Lebanese Sunni fighters were killed inside Syria, apparently after they joined the rebellion against Assad.\u003cbr/\u003eThere were more heavy clashes in Tripoli, northern Lebanon, during the night of December 6th between opponents and supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad who live in adjacent neighbourhoods.\u003cbr/\u003eLebanese troops in trucks and armoured vehicles entered the embattled districts early on December 7th following a night of heavy exchanges of rocket-propelled grenades as well as mortar and machine-gun fire.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fighting in Tripoli pits the Sunni neighbourhood of Bab Tabbaneh, which supports Syria's rebels, against the Alawite neighbourhood of Jabal Mohsen, which supports Assad.\u003cbr/\u003eOne frightened man from Bab Tabbaneh described how he and his family had fled the violence, after fighters in Jabal Mohsen had started shelling them. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We escaped with our families and now we are sleeping on the street in tents,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eOn December 6th at least eight people were reported to have been killed in this week's fighting in the city, and reports on December 7th suggested that the total number of dead could be as high as 13, with another 60 wounded.\u003cbr/\u003eThe most recent hostilities between the rival Tripoli neighbourhoods erupted on December 3rd after news broke that a group of Lebanese Salafist fighters were ambushed by Syrian soldiers in the Syrian town of Tal Kalakh.\u003cbr/\u003eSyrian rebels are predominantly Sunni, whereas Assad and his inner circle are dominated by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.\u003cbr/\u003eOn December 9th gunfire echoed across the northern Lebanese recently killed in an ambush by forces loyal to Assad, were handed over by Syrian security officials.\u003cbr/\u003eTensions in Tripoli had been mounting since reports emerged that some 17 Lebanese Sunni fighters were killed inside Syria, apparently after they joined the rebellion against Assad. \u003cbr/\u003eThe bodies of some of the men were later shown on Syrian state TV.\u003cbr/\u003eAmbulances transferred the bodies of the three men, identified as Mohammed Al Meer, Khodr Mustafa Alameddine and Abdel-Hameed Ali Agha, to their relatives for burial. \u003cbr/\u003eOn December 5th, Syrian Ambassador Ali Abdul Karim Ali told Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour that Damascus had agreed to repatriate the men's bodies. \u003cbr/\u003eMansour was reportedly informed in a letter on December 8th that three of the slain fighters would be returned on December 9th.\u003cbr/\u003eThe letter added that the remaining bodies of Lebanese fighters would be returned in several stages for \"logistical reasons\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe handover is expected to help ease tensions in north Lebanon between opponents and supporters of Assad.
