Various shots of statue of Christ of the Sacred Heart with charred mountain in the background.\u003cbr/\u003eThis summer Europe has been plagued by a series of forest fires that have claimed lives and caused widespread destruction.\u003cbr/\u003eIn August forest fires raged across the Spanish island of Tenerife, devastating large parts of protected woodland.\u003cbr/\u003eHigh in the Tenerife mountains the evidence of this year's forest fires is laid bare.\u003cbr/\u003eLarge parts of the Spanish Island have been completely devastated by the recent fires.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is estimated that over 11,000 hectares (28,000 acres) were destroyed by the wildfires, according to the Environment Ministry. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 12,000 people were evacuated as the fires spread across the island.\u003cbr/\u003eTenerife, one of the seven islands that comprise the Canary archipelago, has Spain's highest mountain as well as some of Europe's unique forests.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pine forests of Mount Teide (3,718 metres or 12,198 feet ) were declared World Patrimony by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) on June 27, 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the intensity of the fires, the \"canary pine tree\" forests are expected to recover and grow back.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local fire chief is Florencio Lopez.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says more than 10,000 acres of forest burned own during the first nine hours of the fire.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom one of their observation posts the local firemen are able to survey the extend of the damage caused by the fires.\u003cbr/\u003eLopez says the mountain's steep slopes acted as a wind funnel and contributed to the spread of the fire.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also says the local species of pine is a good combustible, adding to the spread of the fire.\u003cbr/\u003eHelicopters were used to fight the advancing fires.\u003cbr/\u003eMirolslav Jarnek is one of the fire brigade's helicopter pilots.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says he feels sad about seeing the forests destroyed by the fire.\u003cbr/\u003eTenerife's firefighters depend on the use of aircraft to help them fight forest fires.\u003cbr/\u003eThe recent fires have put a strain on the local government.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of officials responsible for the islands forests is Candido Padron, secretary of environment.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the fire was impossible to stop because it moved too fast for the authorities to stop.\u003cbr/\u003eNow all that remains of the forest is a carpet of ash and cinders.\u003cbr/\u003eFernando Rodriguez is a local Greenpeace activist.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says it will take several decades for the woods to recover from the damage the fires caused.\u003cbr/\u003eGreenpeace is currently involved in an ongoing campaign to promote proper maintenance of the islands forests.\u003cbr/\u003eClose to the where the fires were is the sleepy village of Santiago del Teide, located on the southern foothills of mount Teide.\u003cbr/\u003eThe small village is no stranger to natural disasters.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal tradition says that in 1913 a volcanic eruption threatened the whole village.\u003cbr/\u003eThe villagers fled taking the statue of Jesus of the Sacred Heart from the church to safety in the mountains.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter that a statue of Christ of the Sacred Heart was erected at the base of the mountain.\u003cbr/\u003eSantiago Benitez, is a resident of Santiago de Teide.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says there is no concrete explanation as to why the village was saved from the fire.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the locals believe the village was saved from destruction because the patron saint protected them.\u003cbr/\u003eThroughout the month of August forest fires advanced out of control on several fronts and forced the evacuation of many of the island's villages.\u003cbr/\u003eFor 10 days in August, hundreds of wildfires razed dozens of villages, destroyed livestock and charred an estimated 190,000 hectares (469,000 acres) of mostly forest and farmland, prompting many to call it the worst disaster to hit Greece since World War II.
