Various Chris and Liz in school playground with children, with close-ups of children dancing and singing.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter an almost ten-year absence, the United States Peace Corps has returned to work in Ethiopia.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the organisation was established by John F.Kennedy in 1961, Ethiopia was one of the first countries to invite the Peace Corps to set up a programme. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the Peace Corps has had a troubled past in this Horn of Africa nation, having twice left due to security issues.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, with fears of renewed conflicts, it could mean the Peace Corps may not be staying for long.\u003cbr/\u003eChris and Liz Colizza arrived in Ethiopia in October 2007 to start their two year stint as Peace Corps Volunteers.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're among  42 Americans making up the first team of volunteers to return to Ethiopia since the Peace Corps left nearly a decade ago. \u003cbr/\u003eThe couple, like everyone in the group, is working on HIV/AIDS projects, under the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief programme (PEPFAR) . \u003cbr/\u003eThey'll both serve a total of two years as community health volunteers working in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support, and with orphans and vulnerable children. \u003cbr/\u003eEthiopia's HIV prevalence rate is 2.1% countrywide and 7% in the capital Addis Ababa, according to UNAIDS.\u003cbr/\u003eThe volunteers are based 50 kilometres (31 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa, in a large transit town called Debre Zeit. The road runs from the port of Djbouti to Addis Ababa, and is labelled a high risk area for HIV/AIDS. \u003cbr/\u003eChris works in an administrative role, providing services to people living with HIV/AIDS and on prevention programmes.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says Ethiopia's not quite how they imagined, and that both he and Liz were expecting the stereotypical characteristics of a less developed country - grass huts, candle light and going to bed when the sun went down.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen they arrived, they each received a lump sum of around $400 USD to settle in, and will live on just $200 USD per month each.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say they manage by consuming economically and spending much of their time at home.\u003cbr/\u003e24-year-old Liz wanted to be a Peace Corps Volunteer since High School. Chris decided later, mid-way through college, much to the dislike of their families.\u003cbr/\u003eLiz says that both her parents struggled to accept her decision to volunteer in Ethiopia. Her mother was concerned with her safety, and her father had strong doubts about the country's stability.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the Peace Corps was established in 1961 by John F Kennedy, Ethiopia was one of the first countries to invite the organisation to set up a programme. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1962, 279 volunteers arrived to promote education. \u003cbr/\u003eThey served here until 1977 but left over security fears during the communist Derg regime. The Peace Corps returned in 1995, only to leave five years later during the Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict. \u003cbr/\u003eSince 1962, more than 3,000 people have come here to volunteer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decision to bring the Peace Corps back to Ethiopia now is being questioned because of fears of renewed conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Peter Parr, the Peace Corps director in Ethiopia, doesn't think the organisation is taking a risk. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the information they receive from the Ethiopian government and the United States Embassy advises caution, but assures them that things are stable.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which invited the Peace Corps back, also denies there's anything to worry about. \u003cbr/\u003eWahida Belay, a ministry spokesman, says it's very unlikely any war between Eritrea and Ethiopia will be initiated, and the government is working hard to resolve any problems between the two nations. He adds that the volunteers have nothing to worry about.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the children here at the school that Liz will be supporting, are either infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, perhaps having lost their parents to the disease. \u003cbr/\u003eLiz and Chris say despite the tough conditions, limited cash and being away from family, helping these children makes it all
