Pan left aircraft flying above anemone field\u003cbr/\u003eThe Negev desert is ablaze with red anemone spring flowers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe blossoming of the anemone is a much-awaited event, celebrated with a 5-week long festival in Israel.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's a time of the year when even the desert is alive with colour.\u003cbr/\u003eThis riot of red and green across a stretch of the Negev desert is welcomed each year at the start of spring. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom early February a sea of red anemone flowers spreads through green fields at the start of the Negev desert about 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of Tel Aviv. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a sight that draws thousands of visitors to the area to celebrate five weeks of outdoor activity and celebration in what has become known as the \"Darom Adom\" (Red South) festival. \u003cbr/\u003eThe festival started seven years ago and includes organised walks, play activities for children and plenty of food. \u003cbr/\u003eAs part of the celebrations, walkers go on the  \"March of the Anemone\" giving them a chance to take in the stunning views and get close up shots of the flowers. \u003cbr/\u003eElisha Mizrahi is the regional forester of the Western Negev for the Jewish National Fund.  He calls the anemone is a \"wise flower\" because of its ability to survive and reproduce every year in an inhospitable, semi-desert area:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It gets the advantage of the area; first of all because it has the ability to survive over here. The flower will come in winter time when there is enough moisture; it is rain-dependent, it needs some amount of water in order to develop, but other species cannot do it, so he has what we call \"an autonomy\", he (it) rule(s) the area!\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Northern Negev, where the anemones grow, enjoys between 300 and 350 ml of rain between the end of winter and early spring. This is the secret that allows the flowers to prosper. \u003cbr/\u003eThe anemones blossom right above the so-called \"drought line\", which runs horizontally from the Mediterranean coast towards the west: only 20 kilometres (13 miles) south of here vegetation is scarce and the desert is dry. \u003cbr/\u003e\"People are gathering from all over the country to see this kind of a miracle, the desert is blooming,\" says Mizrahi. \u003cbr/\u003eThe blossoming of the desert, as Mizrahi calls it, is a biblical reference to the prophet Isaiah who described the rejoicing of the salvation of the Jewish people as the wilderness that would \"burst into bloom.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhether for a family picnic, a cycle ride, or just a roll among the flowers, the Darom Adom festival is a time for people to get in touch with nature. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a beautiful area at this time of the year because of the anemone. I love to travel around and enjoy life\", says cyclist Niky Pinkas from the nearby town of Lehavim. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Hebrew word for anemone, \"kalanit\", has a specific meaning closely linked to its reproductive cycle, says Mizrahi:\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you will look on the flower itself you will see a kind of white ring around the centre of the flower.
