Rome municipality's headquarters\u003cbr/\u003eA new appeal for the release of Clementina Cantoni was launched  in a candle-lit demonstration on Monday in Rome.\u003cbr/\u003eA hundred people gathered at Rome's City Hall in front of a large photograph of the Italian aid worker who was kidnapped eight days ago in Afghanistan. \u003cbr/\u003eThe candle-lit vigil, which was organised by the municipality of Rome, was also joined by the association of Italian NGOs, the trade unions, representatives of several political parties and the Roman Jewish community.\u003cbr/\u003eGiuliana Sgrena and Simona Torretta, a journalist and aid worker who had been both taken hostage in Iraq, were in the Campidoglio Square to show their solidarity with Clementina.\u003cbr/\u003eClementina Cantoni, 32, who was working for CARE International on a project helping Afghan widows and their families, was dragged from her car by four men in the centre of the capital, Kabul, on Monday May 16. Since then, conflicting reports have emerged about her fate. \u003cbr/\u003eConfusion surrounded the fate of Cantoni  on Monday, a day after an Afghan government spokesman said Cantoni was alive and healthy. The spokesman also said on Sunday that Afghan officials were in contact with 32-year-old Cantoni's kidnappers to secure her release. \u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement came two days after reports quoting the purported kidnapper, Temur Shah, as saying he had killed her because the government did not agree to his demands.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
