Various lab shots\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe mystery surrounding Parkinson's disease is one step closer to being solved.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists at the National Institutes of Health have for the first time identified a gene  abnormality that causes some cases of Parkinson's disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThe debilitating disease affects millions of people, gradually destroying the part of their  brain that controls movement.\u003cbr/\u003eNo cause was ever known - until now.\u003cbr/\u003eYet while the discovery is being hailed as a \"milestone\" for science...much work still  needs to be done.\u003cbr/\u003eFor years, doctors and scientists have struggled to find a cure for Parkinson's Disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThe neurological disorder affects millions of people, causing tremors, stiffness of  muscles and loss of movement - in severe cases, it can leave victims with little to no  physical control.\u003cbr/\u003eThe disease gained notoriety when legendary boxer Mohammad Ali developed the  condition.\u003cbr/\u003eU-S Attorney General Janet Reno is another well-known sufferer of Parkinson's.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists have never figured out what causes the disease - but at last, they're finding  some answers.\u003cbr/\u003eA team of international researchers has found a gene they believe is responsible for  some cases of Parkinson's disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThe discovery may help researchers determine the underlying cause of the disease and  lead to better treatments.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"What has been missing is any understanding of why the cells become damaged and  die. Today's findings are important because they give us a new idea. An idea that could  lead to a new understanding of how these cells are injured, and new treatments to slow  them in their degeneration.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Zach Hall, MD, Director, National Institute of Neurological Disorders\u003cbr/\u003eLate last year, researchers identified the location of the gene - on the long arm of  chromosome four.\u003cbr/\u003eIn this current study, researchers studied families with Parkinson's, and learned they all  share a mutation in the same gene.\u003cbr/\u003eThat means at least certain cases of Parkinson's disease are genetic.\u003cbr/\u003eThis discovery could be a major breakthrough in identifying individuals who are at future  risk of developing the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"It may be possible, for example, to identify individuals at risk in some of the families in  which the mutations are found, who are at risk but don't show the disease yet, and be  able to develop clinical protocols for testing methods for intervening, perhaps delaying or  preventing the onset of the disease.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Robert Nussbaum, MD, National Human Genome Research  Institute\u003cbr/\u003eBut researchers stress that this gene only accounts for certain cases of Parkinson's  disease, and probably only a small number at that. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are most likely other mutations, and other causes yet to be determined that lead  to the majority of Parkinson cases.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is not a cure, this is not an advance that people should go to their physicians  tomorrow to seek a new test to find out whether they or their relatives are at risk from a  particular form of Parkinson's Disease, but rather is sort of an opening of the black box,  and a glimpse of a mechanism, of an answer to the why question that we didn't know  before. But there's many more steps on this road.
