Various of seamstress making bullfighter cape
It''s the end of an era. Bullfighting is to be banned in Catalonia, with the last corrida scheduled for this weekend (September 25, 2011)
The end of a centuries-old tradition is a victory for animal rights activists - but a cultural disaster say afficionados of the fight.
Half a ton of angry bull races towards a bullfighter, who takes refuge behind a solid fence.
With the bull wounded by a spear stabbed to its neck muscles, and a series of barbed sticks (banderillas) in its neck, the matador takes over.
It''s the classic image of the bright and brave matador teasing the raging beast before killing it with a sword buried deep between the shoulder blades.
This is the bullfight, Spanish-style - but not for much longer, at least not in Catalonia.
These are the last few days of the bullfight in Barcelona, a sport that has roots going back centuries.
Catalonia is the first Spanish province to ban bullfighting but it is a controversial decision.
The last scheduled event is due to take place this weekend (Sunday September 25, 2011) even although the law is not legally effective until 2012.
The Spanish public is deeply divided over the bullfight, some claim it is a deep-rooted cultural heritage, others that it is a barbaric blood sport with no place in a civilised democracy.
In Catalonia, the autonomous region of north east Spain with Barcelona as its capital , the audience has voted with its feet.
The magnificent arena - Plaza de toros Monumental de Barcelona - was built in 1914 and has a capacity for thousands. Now it can only muster a smattering of spectators - most of them tourists.
Following years of debate and nationwide political unrest, on July 28 2010 the local parliament thrust a sword deep into this centuries-old Spanish tradition. The vote ends a blood-soaked pageant that for centuries has fascinated artists and writers from Goya to Hemingway.
Although the initiative was originated by animal rights groups, many see the ban as a political statement by a wealthy and powerful region that likes to assert how different it is from the rest of Spain, rather than an expression of concern over cruelty to the half-ton beasts by sword-wielding matadors.
Regardless of the ban, the glory days of this Spanish fiesta in Barcelona are long gone. The local arena is the only one left in the region. Out of a nationwide total of roughly 1,000 bouts each season the Barcelona ring stages just 15 bullfights - and they find it hard to find an audience.
The tradition of men fighting bulls has existed under different forms since ancient times with mosaics and wall paintings depicting men in combat with bulls in ancient Greece dating back to 2000 BC.
At first matadors were mounted on horses and were aided by men on foot waving capes.
But at some point the men on foot began to draw more attention from the public and the modern "corrida" (Spanish for bullfight) was born.
A "corrida" show consists of six bulls with three matadors taking turns to achieve the 15 minute long task of killing the beast in front of them.
Ruper Campanon is a big fan of bullfights.
She finds the ban outrageous as she says people should have the freedom to choose whether to go to the arena or not:
"I feel very bad, very bad.
