Literally translated it means \"Garden of the Six Sublimities.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Chinese tradition there are six sublime qualities to which a garden can aspire.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Spaciousness and seclusion, artifice and antiquity, waterways and panoramas, it is from a combination of these six characteristics that Kenrokuen garden takes its name,\" says Shigeyo.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the winter months a team of ten gardeners bind the garden''s ancient pine trees with ropes to stunning effect. \u003cbr/\u003eIt takes approximately 180 ropes to bind a single tree.  \u003cbr/\u003eKaneda Kinya, is one of the most experienced gardeners on the team.  He explains, that the process begins on November 1st and lasts until mid December. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In this region (the Hokuriku region) particularly in Ishikawa prefecture, during the winter months the snow contains an extremely high moisture content. Because of this, if we don''t bind the trees, the branches snap under the weight,\" says Shigeyo \u003cbr/\u003eEach of the most experienced gardeners on the team climb to the top of the pole from which the ropes are suspended 4 times per year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe work is arduous, and demands agility, concentration and courage. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter more than 22 years working with the pine trees, Kaneda Kinya says he still feels anxious on the first climb of the year. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I have to climb to the top of the pole 4 times each season.
