Mid shot of the antique collections \u003cbr/\u003eTEFAF Maastricht is the world''s most influential art and antiques annual fair brings together an extraordinary range of important works.\u003cbr/\u003eIt seems that after a difficult economic year the market is recovering as the wealthy invest their savings in works of art. \u003cbr/\u003eA painting of the Madonna and the infant Christ is attracting attention at this year''s Maastricht art fair. \u003cbr/\u003eThe stylised rocky landscape and the beautiful serene face of the Madonna are  typical of the artist Sandro Botticelli. \u003cbr/\u003eOften referred to as the Rockefeller Madonna, it remained in the collection of the wealthy Rockefeller dynasty for half a century\u003cbr/\u003eIn more recent years it has been part of a private collection in New York. \u003cbr/\u003eHugo Nathan, President of art-dealers  Dickinson New York-London, says this Botticelli''s Madonna is the last in private hands :\" so for any collector or museums that doesn''t have one it''s a last opportunity to get a picture by one of the great names of Renaissance''s  Florence\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe painting of the young Saint John kneeling in prayer before the Madonna and the infant Christ is expected to sell for around ï¿½11.1 million (US$15 million).\u003cbr/\u003eDickinson of London and New York are also exhibiting Deux Femmes, an important late Tahitian work painted by Paul Gauguin in 1902, for a price in the region of ï¿½18 million ($24.7 million ). \u003cbr/\u003eThe picture was painted in  a year before Gauguin''s death, while he was living on Hiva Oa in the remote Marquesas Islands 740 miles from Tahiti. \u003cbr/\u003eThe two female figures relate to the Biblical character of Eve, a key figure in Gauguin''s personal mythology.\u003cbr/\u003eHammer Galleries of New York , who are newcomers to TEFAF Maastricht, have a exhibition including Jeune fille assise, les cheveux dï¿½nouï¿½s by Amedeo Modigliani. \u003cbr/\u003eThis masterpiece, painted in 1919 while Modigliani was staying in the Midi region of the south of France for health reasons, is priced at over ï¿½12.75 million ( $17.5 million).\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the many fine Old Master paintings at TEFAF Maastricht in 2010 is a domestic altarpiece by Giovanni di Paolo (Siena, c. 1397-1482).\u003cbr/\u003eThe Madonna and Child enthroned between Saint Bartholomew, Saint James Major (the apostle) and female saints is a domestic altarpiece in its original frame dates from the 15th century. \u003cbr/\u003eThe altarpiece exhibited by Moretti of Florence/London/ New York is expected to sell for around ï¿½2 million($ 2.74 million) .\u003cbr/\u003eTEFAF commissioned a report on the art market from Art Economics, a consulting firm run by Dr. Clare McAndrew, to analyse the global art market. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report found that in 2008, total sales in the global market for fine and decorative art reached just over ï¿½42.2 billion (58 billion US Dollars), down over 12% from its peak in 2007 of ï¿½48.1 billion (66 billion US Dollars)\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2009, sales are estimated to have slipped further, dropping by about 26% to ï¿½31.3 billion (43 billion US Dollars) as the effects of the global recession filtered down to some sectors of the art market.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are currently over 400,000 listed businesses in the art market worldwide. \u003cbr/\u003eThese businesses support close to 2 million jobs and also a substantial amount of indirect employment and revenue through links to a range of other industries associated with the art trade. \u003cbr/\u003eThe middle market (in terms of prices) appears to have been one of the worst hit by the global recession in 2008 and 2009, while the very high and very low ends of the market have fared better.\u003cbr/\u003eFirst figures are showing that 2010 is year of recovery for the art market. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Clare McAndrew says : \"luxury spending are down certainly is on like luxury cars, handbags, luxury clothing spending are down nearly 20 percent.
