Close up of carnation\u003cbr/\u003eKenya, along with the rest of Africa, is bearing the brunt of climate change. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country's currently in the grip of a severe drought.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Kenya is trying to go green with geothermal energy produced from the heart of a national park.\u003cbr/\u003eThis zebra lives in the Hells Gate National park in Kenya.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it doesn't dwell in typical wildlife surroundings.\u003cbr/\u003eA cloud of steam rises behind the zebra's grazing ground.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat looks threatening is in fact a source of green energy.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile solar and wind power get most of the headlines, geothermal power is quietly gaining traction in Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Olkaria Geothermal plant was set up in 1981 to gather energy from the heat stored in the earth.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly three years later, the area became a National Park.\u003cbr/\u003eGeoffrey Muchemi is the geothermal manager of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen).\u003cbr/\u003eHe explains what they are searching for to assess geothermal potential.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When we are looking for geothermal, we look for indicators that tell us that there is geothermal. These indicators include the red soil, the white soil, the yellowish sulphur material, all those indicate to us that this area is a potential geothermal area.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Olkaria Geothermal plant got its name from the Maasai word for red soil.\u003cbr/\u003eThis red soil is found all around the park, wells are drilled as far as 3000 metres into the earth's crust to harvest the precious steam that is later used to produce power.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 80 square kilometre geothermal plant lies on one of 20 geothermal fields in Kenya.\u003cbr/\u003eEven though it is effective in producing green energy, the large investments required to set up more geothermal plants hinder the progress of creating a greener nation.\u003cbr/\u003eAn estimated amount of over 80 billion dollars (US) would be needed to set up a geothermal power plant. And it would take between 8 and 10 years to research potential areas, drill into the earth's crust to harvest steam and set up a power plant. No wonder most investors are hesitant to approach the idea.\u003cbr/\u003eMuchemi says that, alongside the wildlife in the park, the plant itself has turned into an attraction.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The project has also enhanced the attractiveness of the park, because we have a lot of visitors coming to the park to see the development and this, they pay to Kenya Wildlife Services for their entrance and this money goes back to conservation efforts for the park.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLocated 90 kilometers (55.9 miles) from the bustling capital, Nairobi, the 68 square kilometre reserve houses over 100 species of birds and fauna, including buffalos, giraffes, zebras, leopards, impalas, gazelles and the occasional migrating elephants and lions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe towering cliffs and undulating grasslands provide a serene environment for tourists to walk alongside zebras, giraffes and buffalos grazing in the park, as the geothermal plant in the distance carries away steam into the sky.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, everything good has a downside, according to Rauni Munene, the Deputy Park Warden of the Hells Gate National Park.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Having a geothermal activity in a national park is not so natural and sometimes it disturbs the animals in the park. That one is a disadvantage, the advantage is that on the side of tourism, we have visitors coming to the park, coming to see the geothermal and knowing how it works and through that we earn revenue into the park,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the places using the geothermal energy produced in the park is this flower farm.\u003cbr/\u003eOserian Development Company grows over 100 different varieties of flowers exclusively for the European market.\u003cbr/\u003eRelying completely on the green energy, it is the first geothermal powered flower farm in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe energy is used to maintain temperatures in the greenhouses, eradicating fungus growth on the flowers, and using geothermal gases such as carbon dioxide enhances the growth of the flowers.\u003cbr/\u003eBruce Knight, engineering director of Oserian Development Company, says that using geothermal energy has many advantages for them.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Major advantages of geothermal are the power giving us a cost reduction, the carbon dioxide giving us quality and productivity, the heating controlling disease problems and the heating also providing us with sterilization. employees care for the 240 hectares (593 acres) of green houses filled with flowers that have been grown using geothermal energy since 2003. \u003cbr/\u003eEach year, Oserian flower farm exports 350 million stems.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the cut-throat flower industry, where competition makes or breaks a company, the striking blossoming Oserian flowers continue to lure in thousands of flower lovers
